“The cheque’s in the post.”
“The van broke down.”
“This sprout, cabbage and butter-bean stew is just perfect.”Also, a slogan put up by a local estate agent just as the property recession was getting going in 2008 “There’s never been a better time to buy.” The words ‘lying’, ‘through’ and ‘teeth’ come to mind!
I once worked in an electrical goods shop where the salesman frequently told customers who had just decided what to buy…”Good little telly / fridge / washing machine……got one of these myself.” All I can say is that he must have had one example every product on sale in the shop!!
10 April, 2010 at 8:57 pm #437592During the last European election campaign UKIP featured Winston Churchill on the front of their propaganda leaflets. In 1946, Winston Churchill proposed a ‘United States of Europe’.
Quite a big gaffe on the part of UKIP, methinks!
9 April, 2010 at 7:21 am #436980Most conspiracy theories are pure fantasy. On the subject of 9/11 – yes, there was a conspiracy – by Al Qaeda.
I do have one conspiracy theory about a recent event, though. That’s the Toyota re-calls. Without pointing the finger too closely, all the safety concerns about Toyota cars appear to have surfaced in the USA within a short space of time. Could it be that interests close to the US motor industry decided to adopt ‘dirty tricks’ tactics?
5 March, 2010 at 11:54 am #435143As it turned out, it might have been worse – he was a very tall, powerful man in an expensive looking coat. Afterwards I gathered that he might well have been a serious criminal who was on bail – but that still doesn’t explain his motive. Surely it was risky for him in an area where the police had been at an incident only a few minutes earlier and there were still some around.
5 March, 2010 at 11:49 am #435141I had a similar situation some years ago. I was stopped, while on foot, and manhandled by someone claiming to be a CID police officer. The man explained there had been a robbery in the area and I resembled the description of a suspect. Earlier there had indeed been an alarm going and police in the area, which made the man seem plausible. After the incident I called the police and they sent an officer out to talk to me.
It emerged that the man who stopped me was NOT a plain-clothes police officer – the ID card he’d flashed was not a police one. But what was his motive? He didn’t try to rob me, he just held me against the wall and questioned me for 2 or 3 minutes, then let me go.
17 February, 2010 at 10:10 pm #432236I’m in favour of a the law being changed to permit euthanasia when a person is:
a) Terminally ill and is experiencing severe suffering, and
b) They had previously expressed a wish, before witnesses, that they would want their life to be terminated in such circumstances. While Mr. Gosling might have acted compassionately and done the best thing for his partner, a situation where people take the law into their own hands can’t go unchallenged. If we legalise euthanasia it would have to be permitted only after permission from experts had been gained, on a case-by-case basis.
If someone merely claims they killed someone many years ago to end their suffering, they could be lying – they might have done it because they didn’t want to see that person suffering, which is different. Or they could have done it for more sinister reasons. Or, perhaps, if they won’t name the individual concerned, the whole story might even be made up.
I suspect, though, that people who seriously consider ending the suffering of a loved one are prepared to face the possibility of life imprisonment as a price to pay for ending that suffering. It’s unacceptable that the law of the land puts people in such a position because the political establishment is reluctant to stand up to religious bigotry.
9 February, 2010 at 9:41 am #430887There are 4 types of music that I consider to be nearly all bad: Jazz, country, opera and rap.
I watched the video and for once I can say ‘I don’t call that music, it’s just noise’!!
However, despite the cacophonous disarray, it did appear they could probably play their instruments quite well if need be.
9 February, 2010 at 9:36 am #431909This is a christian country and has christian laws
As an atheist I would dispute the fact that we have Christian laws, most of the laws here have been made on the basis of protecting people. There are a few archaic laws that go back to the days when the Church of England was a lot more powerful than it is now.
I do not think that Sikh daggers should be an exception to the knife laws. Fair enough, an exception was made for turbans many years ago vis a vis uniforms, but daggers are different. Surely Sikhs could permit a ceremonial symbolic knife that is harmless.
An early precedent, in a way, is when skinheads were stopped from wearing hob-nail ‘bovver boots’ in the 1970’s – which gave rise to them adopting Doc Martens instead.
8 February, 2010 at 10:03 pm #430758Homosexuality and hetrosexuality are both natural. Most people are heterosexual, a minority are homosexual, some people are bisexual and a small number of people have no sexual interest at all. I think these are all natural conditions – whether it’s as a result of the way people are born or the what they encounter in their life, I don’t know, but it’s probably a combination of the two.
You can compare it to whether it’s natural to be an agressive, energetic adrenalin junkie living on their nerves or a laid -back lazy person who just wants a queit life – again, both types are natural.
6 February, 2010 at 10:02 pm #430562I just looked up the one so-called psychic’s list of their top 10 prophesies for 2009
Out of 10, 9 definitely didn’t occur. The other prediction, broadly suggesting that an un-named celebrity would be a crime victim, was so vague as to be meaningless. -
