I wonder what sort of noise those artificial paws make on a hard floor. The world’s first tap-dancing cat?
11 June, 2010 at 9:10 am #441587In a way, British Rail as it now exists is the perfect fruition of the Beeching plan! A nationalised railway company that only owns disused railways and properties and runs no trains!
10 June, 2010 at 9:11 am #441704I’m a leftist atheist and I see radical Islam as being very right-wing in most aspects.
My view on Sharia law is this: If individuals wish to live their own lives according to Sharia law, they should be allowed to do so as long as they don’t contravene the national laws and as long as they don’t try and force Sharia law on others. National laws should remain paramount. I also think that there should be legislation that sets boundaries to the powers and claims of religions. One such law would be that the greatest penalty any religion can apply to a member is expulsion from that religion.
There are difficult questions connected with Sharia law. One is the burkha / veil or other islamic dress. Given that we’re allowed to dress how we like in this country (indeed it’s not an offence, per se, to be naked in public here) one could argue that if women, (or men for that matter) wish to go around with their face covered, they should be free to do so. On the other hand it’s not difficult to imagine that a lot of women and probably some men wear Islamic dress because they’re pressurised to do so.
One thing we have heard very little about in the media is what level of internal coercion and religious policing goes on within Britain’s Muslim communities. It might be very little, it might be a lot. Either way, it would make a very intersting TV investigation.
10 June, 2010 at 9:02 am #441744I’m against fox hunting as a sport or leisure pastime. But I accept that foxes and other wild animals might need to be culled. If this happens it should be done humanely by professionals, presumably by cage-trapping and then euthanasia. Hunting, shooting or poisoning would obviously be impractical in towns anyway.
It’s very sad about the twin girls being attacked by a fox. I haven’t heard of people being attacked by foxes before, though. I remember hearing a man was seriously injured by a badger a few years ago. Pet dogs cause a lot more injuries to humans than urban foxes do.
5 June, 2010 at 2:51 pm #441253I think Lady Gaga is OK but she’s a bit of a one-trick pony – mixing conventional music with eccentric lyrics and costumes.
3 June, 2010 at 12:27 pm #441448When I was young, the permissive society was about men growing their hair in a way that shocked their grandparents and middle-class girls behaving in a way that was calculated to shock Mummy and Daddy.
Now the permissive society is more about recreational violence, bullying, binge drinking etc.
19 May, 2010 at 10:25 am #440567While these attackers deserve to die and I wouldn’t weep any tears over them if they met a nasty end, I remain opposed to capital punishment because if it were re-introduced, sooner or later there would be a miscarriage of justice leading to an innocent person being executed.
Prison sentences for murderers and other violent criminals should be harsher though – solitary confinement with very few activities – no TV, books or anything. They should not be considered for release on licence for at least 20 years, rather than 15 years as at present. Judges should also have more power to sentence murderers for terms longer than the standard 30 year tarriff.
The crucial thing here is that if someone is wrongly convicted the situation can be partly rectified, as has happened in several cases in recent years. Sure, they will have lost a chunk of their life and might seek compensation, but in the end they get their life back. They also live to see their name cleared.
14 May, 2010 at 8:55 am #439845Why don’t they have birthday cake made from green vegetables? They could even FORCE the children to eat it in the name of healthy eating
PS I don’t like green vegetables apart from peas. Sprouts are the worst, they’re like eating dog poo.
4 May, 2010 at 1:26 pm #438735It looks like we could see a situation where the Lib Dems could get more votes than Labour but less than half as many seats. That is clearly undemocratic.
What I would favour is halving the number of constituencies but each one electing 2 MPs – the winning candidate and the one who came second. That would be much more representative.
