Hi Emma,
Not 100% sure what your describing, but it sounds as though something is happening at start up which is delaying the desktop initialisation, this can be all sorts of things, can you also describe the little square that is in the middle that you click on? is it AVG updating?
are you only running one anti-virus?

If it was me I would firstly clear the start up ‘folder’ this contains software programs that run at start up, they tend to install by themselves and can be restarted manually from ‘programs’ so this will not uninstall or damage them.
Also go to ‘Scheduled Tasks in the Control Panel and see what is in there, these can be safely disabled.
Also, take a not of what you do so that you can reinstate anything if it goes wrong.

Try,

Start/all programs/start up – delete start up contents and re-boot.
