ok.. fasty beat me to it in the flippancy department .. but i still say it wasnt as cruel at some of the offensive postings on here.
But i will let it lie..
and i pondered the fine words. and i agree. Im sure the great man would have meant starving children in his ” helpless a creature ” too.
The abhorrence at the plight of the poor and the starving is a ‘given’ with any decent, sentient human being. An equal abhorrence at the exploitation of animals is not; we don’t farm human babies for food or clothing; they aren’t herded into trucks and journeyed through towns and cities to specially constructed buildings, to be (crying in fear) hanged by the heels and stunned prior to having throats cut, or bolts shot through their skulls.
Human babies aren’t sliced and diced into stews and sandwiches, and coats and shoes, and so much a part of a fabric of society that never a thought is given to the butchery and slaughter in our midst.
So…when Ghandi said (and i’ll quote it again as it bears saying many times)”The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man” he was addressing SOLELY the moral bankruptcy of any society that exploits and abuses animals.
I say again, the abhorrence at the plight of the poor and starving is a ‘given.’ As long as the vile abuse of animals continues to be nothing more than an afterthought, then I shall continue to live by what the great man said, and won’t be lectured that in so doing it makes me less of a humanitarian, on the fuc.king contrary!

all in a days walkI mean, I love puddings myself but not after fetching water for half a day. …. to be 3 miles away – why don’t we all move to where the stand pipe is? … http://www.justchat.co.uk/boards/viewtopic.php … sid=68ee... – 64k – 22 hours ago – Cached – Similar pages

Whislt i have empathy for animals. I dont see the usual JC slaggings on those posts. imagine if someone DARED put up a jokey comment ! ya would be persona non grata before ye got last word out !
/persona non grata. dundee !
Actually, you’re wrong there..go and check out the flippant comments on the relevant thread in General Gossip; and while you’re there, consider this quote from the great Mahatma Ghandi:
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man”
I had to take my cat to the vets this evening, I wondered where she had been all day, I think she has been bumped by a car, emergency vet said she may have a broken pelvis They are going to see how she is going this evening and if she is still worse for wear in the morning they are going to x ray her, I just hope she is ok.
I’m so sorry, Sian. I’ll have my fingers crossed that all will go well for the poor little thing. Keep us posted.
We’re meat eaters Esme whether you believe in God or evolution we have the teeth for it we’ve always ate meat and clothed ourselves in skins since the first humans walked the earth and if we all became vegeterians what would happen to the animals we breed to eat. They’d be slaughtered. What we need is some balance Rear the animals properly and sod the cost pass it on to the consumer
Just because we have always done something, doesn’t mean we need always continue to do it. We used to burn people like me at the stake, but that doesn’t make it right (yeah..yeah..form an orderly queue to light the bonfire) and I would rather see breeds of animal disappear than continue to breed them to ultimately suffer.
How anyone can put the butchered parts of a fellow creature into their mouth, is beyond me.
I’ve heard all the arguments, in a long lifetime of vegetarianism, so I really can’t be arsed with it all to be honest. I’m tired.
I suppose the same way we’d change ours keep and kill the animals humanely and kill them as humanely as possible
That’s an oxymoron if ever there was, to ‘kill animals humanely.’ There is no such thing as a ‘humane’ kill. The deliberate stopping of a heartbeat is by its very nature, inhumane, and will one future day,be regarded as barbaric.
Perhaps if these African Governments put use to the borrowed money instead of fighting each other then the ‘democracies’ (loosely termed) would be a little more forgiving?
Generalisation? Yep damn sure it is… because most famine and hardship has been caused by wars of varying degrees.
she is bloody brilliant isnt she, I absolutely love her.
saying dierdre was a chain smoking fish wife like Kens book character…
Yeah she’s a terrific character..as rude as I would LOVE to be! :P
You do get the licence for that when your older, I witness whilst at work on a daily basis the bashings that the oldies give each other in the disabled car park outside my office.
They really do open your eyes I tell thee  cracking laugh for us though, hanging out the windows gawping!
And police have been called before when its got overheated… tell you what I cant bloody wait!
I still haven’t recovered from being rugby-tackled by a gang of elderly ladies at a Bring-and-buy sale. I nearly had my fingernails wrenched off trying to hold on to a crocheted lampshade. As for the home baking, it was like watching a plague of locusts descend on Egypt; by the time I got to the table there was nowt left but a gingerbread crumb and a pool of dribble. :?
Pouring millions of people’s hard earnt money into ‘Save this’ and Save that’ for the latest banana republic government to cypher it all off to carry on their wars and leave their people more desperately in trouble. But hey if these warring African countries were oil rich despots the USA would be interested!
So you’d have them starve to death cause they cant grow food or die of thirst cause theyre too infirm to fetch water. Birth control is the last thing they need
ok i give in. keep throwing money at em…….while they keep producing kids they cant feed or keep healthy. after all it isnt their fault is it.
Population control isn’t the issue any more Pats… but drought and damage to infrastructure through war is. They are watching their children die in front of their eyes. This isn’t a question of having too many children and not being able to feed them. And yes you are right.. it isn’t their fault.
In another thread there was an outpouring of grief and horror because a dog was skinned alive for the fur trade. But yet on this thread.. it is as Actor paraphrased earlier in this thread… let them eat stand pipes!
Was my post fuc.king invisible or what? It goes without saying that any decent human is horrified by the suffering of the innocent..but in my book..that includes every living creature. In fact..hell..I PREFER animals to human beings and i’ll stand by that belief until a rabbit picks up a gun and shoots a poacher; a kitten drowns a farmer in a sack and an ass leads us all into a war..oops..that one’s been done.
Quit with the supercilious attitude and the cryptic musings..huh..leave them to the experts.
