Wasn’t the “Windows Advantge” supposed to counteract mass software piracy rather than the lone t wat that spends all day trying to get everything for free?
I saw on the news that it has recently been released in China and they are in an uproar over this, as nearly 80 percent of the products are unlicensed.
There is nothing wrong with Microsoft protecting it’s products, as long as it doesn’t affect legitimate users, which of course it has and now it will again! I think they were taken to court for something to do with this – I need to check that – and how many times have they been taken to court due to them using unlawful practices?
Of course it’s wrong to get pirated copies but then it’s also wrong for Microsoft to put things on your computer without disclosing all the facts, but they still do it!
The Windows Genuine Advantage tool isn’t about the “lone” pirate or indeed mass piracy …. it is all about piracy full stop. I think that the common perception seems to be that it’s OK if only one or two people do it … and only wrong when hundreds of thousands do it.
Yes the Chinese have thrown a collective conniption fit, as their (illegal) screens have been blacked out. Tough luck I say. They stole it in the first place, why should they be allowed to carry on getting free support on an unlicensed (stolen) product?
Your point Fek about MS affecting innocent users doesn’t really hold up. The downloaded tool has been in use by MS for a long time now and is solely used to check if the installation is genuine (i.e. not stolen). If it is, then nothing happens; the update is downloaded and installed and life goes on. It only affects illegal copies.
23 October, 2008 at 10:05 am #384635Well it was more likely “Chicken” chow mein than sweet & sour … but no matter.
I’ve unwittingly eaten cat meat (in Malta) so I speak from personal experience. Mind you it was presented to me as “rabbit” but they are pretty similar.
So come on you people of Stourbridge – own up. You all like eating a little bit of pussy don’t you?
Here’s a message from a local Chinese take-away owner to his customers: “Here’s hoping you have a Merry Miaow ……. oooops I mean Christmas”

23 October, 2008 at 9:38 am #384667I watched the video and ended up thinking that she looked and acted like a typical showbiz wannabe. All silly speech affectations; bouffant blonde hair; wildly over exaggerated hand gestures; trying desperately to sound intelligent but with nothing of any importance to say.
It would appear that her major claim to fame (currently) is that she chose to have her tits surgically reduced and whatsmore did it in front of a complete film crew. So much for personal privacy or – God help us – modesty.
Probably one of the more excessive displays of attention seeking I’ve seen for a long time.
23 October, 2008 at 9:33 am #384632This missing cats matter is now getting serious! It featured in a half page article in today’s Daily Telegraph – same map; same locations of missing cats; same “triangle” BUT the DT superimposed road names (in an attempt to be helpful no doubt).
I can’t be bothered to Google for the name of the Chinese take-away in Meriden Avenue, but interestingly enough none of the Press OR the RSPCA have noticed this link.
BTW: cat meat when cooked looks and tastes remarkably like chicken. If the population of Stourbridge start saying “Miaow” to each other we will have our answer to this mystery.
22 October, 2008 at 4:56 pm #384645Totally.

This is very serious. Come on PB own up, what have you done with them, eh? eh?
catsI’ve figured out the mystery of the “Purr-Muda Triangle” by using Google maps.
If you call up a map of Stourbridge and zoom in on the area where cat number 10 went missing, you will notice on the North side of the junction ……..
……. there is a Chinese Take-Away !!!!!!!
Nuff said eh??????????
21 October, 2008 at 11:04 pm #380560As we know, lots of people are getting infected with “Windows AntiVirus 2008” which is a nasty little so & so and difficult to remove once it is installed.
It is often downloaded onto your computer without your knowledge (as a “drive by” download) when you visit music or movie sites or even, shall we say, less than reputable sites.
However in order for it to be installed, it has to be given a command from the computer user. It suckers you into doing this by presenting you with what appears to be a genuine Windows security warning message – even including the little Orange/Green/Blue/ & Yellow shield from the Windows Security Centre. (to see what this looks like, go to ‘Control Panel and look at / click to open “Security Centre”).
From then on, it doesn’t matter whether you click “OK” or “Cancel” or even the red cross in the top right hand corner, it will execute as if you had clicked “OK”. Nasty eh?
The way to kill it before it installs is to press Ctrl + Alt + Del and this will open Task Manager on your desktop. Click the Left tab called “Applications” then highlight the line called “Windows security warning (or similar) and then click “End Task” which is usually one of the buttons at the bottom right hand side.
BTW you can also use this method to get rid of internet pop-ups (assuming that you get them) without running the risk of them installing anything onto your computer.

Next please ???
21 October, 2008 at 10:42 pm #384318Actually the Student version of Office 2007 does have a slightly reduced functionality (some of the more advanced editing options aren’t included for example) – but for most Home users this wouldn’t represent an issue.
You can buy one that is fully licensed – all you need is an e-mail address that is a genuine ”academic” one i.e. if you are at a school or college you need one in your own name at that organisation.
So yes this is an excellent tip to save money on buying or upgrading Microsoft software.
