I thought it was Tommy Toxen and Tony Montana, but I didn’t want to say anything in case Tommy hadn’t told Darth he had been dumped yet.

Clarification on museum ‘job’ reports
The city council has moved to clarify the position of a man claiming he was denied the chance to apply for a job in the council’s museum service because he is white. Many national media are today covering the story, following a report in yesterday’s Brighton Argus newspaper (July 12).
The post in question is actually a temporary work experience role aimed at MA students, part of a national government-backed training programme. It is specifically aimed at giving work experience opportunities to people from ethnic minorities, who are under-represented in the museums profession.
While people from ethnic minorities make up eight per cent of the UK population, they account for just 2.49 per cent of museum workers.Without the government scheme, the role in Brighton would not exist.
Many similar posts with the same recruitment criteria are being created nationally under the Museum, Libraries and Archive Council’s Renaissance programme. These include Tyne & Wear, Sheffield, Exeter, London and Warwickshire.
Such ‘positive action’ in recruitment is legal and commonplace since legislation allowing it was passed 30 years ago. It can be used where ethnic minorities are under-represented in a professional area.

Now, this is positively my last post on this topic but here (for those who are unable or unwilling to consider any alternative to sensationalist media headlines or BNP website) is the official council press release. I am not saying they are right and I am not saying they are wrong. I am still not interested. I am merely reminding people that there could be all sorts of legitimate reasons for the council’s policy – as indeed you will find here that the post wouldn’t exist at all were it not specifically funded for ethnic applicants. So, no use encouraging people to send snottogram emails to the council, is there? (unless there is a scheme to employ ethnic minorities to answer emails – if that’s the case go ahead). The council’s Equal Opportunities statement is also on their website which includes extracts from a report condemning the council for ‘institutionalised racism’ and demanding ‘urgent action’ to redress the situation. One temporary method of URGENTLY addressing the situation, of course, is to positively recruit from the ethnic minorities (as the Police, Armed Forces and other ‘institutions’ have been doing for years). So there you go; you now have more information upon which to judge the subject. Can’t be bad eh?
And please try to avoid the ‘stupid little boy’ namecalling stuff, Geoffrey – it’s rather immature and makes you sound like Captain Mainwaring from Dad’s Army.

You mean SERGEANT BILKO? Are you perhaps confusing him with the comedy actor Steve Martin who played the part?
Oh and t’Internet was not around in 1977, even in South Africa, so the answer is ‘No, he didn’t’.

Put your toys back in your pram kid and stop bashing for the sake of it. Emma has made a valid and unedited post.
Ok in case you didn’t realise Geoff, I do not generally get involved in long, drawn-out debates on any of Emma’s rants – I do like, however, to offer a different angle to look at things and leave those who ARE interested to continue the debate. However, just this once, I shall clarify matters for you as, like Emma, you also seem to have difficulties accepting anyone else’s viewpoint on some matters.
Her original source is the BNP website. It is obvious that any quotes/links contained therein are going to be supportive (or at least tolerant) of BNP views i.e. not impartial. It is POSSIBLE that, by finding alternative sources of information, there may be a valid explanation for the policy. Some people therefore may be interested to look beyond the BNP headlines for an alternative viewpoint. Emma’s post may be unedited but, since it came from the BNP website, why should anyone believe it is valid? I happen to challenge most things I see in that website and, historically (see other threads), virtually everything in it is a load of rubbish or shown at a poisonous slant to stir up racial tensions.
Just because you saw a similar story on the local telly doesn’t mean the BNP have reported impartially. It just means you are as guilty as the BNP and Emma of believing what you want to believe. Many people believe George Bush is a war criminal – many people believe he is a hero. If you hold either view you can find plenty of ‘evidence’ to ‘validate’ your opinion. There is probably plenty of ‘evidence’ to prove that Brighton Council have acted entirely rationally – maybe people should go and look for something to challenge the latest Emma rant.
Personally, I can’t be @rsed looking as anything contrary to the BNP opinion could itself be biased but you should try to remember Geoffrey that it is is occasionaly permitted in this Chatsite to produce viewpoints that differ from yours – it is not “bashing for the sake of it”, it is enabling discussion or debate.
18 July, 2006 at 5:00 pm #231432I assume Brighton council also has steps in place to recruit a certain number of lesbian and gays too but I don’t ever hear you gay-bashing Emma. Similarly, they are likely to have (or previously had) a quota for the number of women in council posts but I don’t expect you will complain about that either. I am personally against positive-discrimination but it is likely that there were sound reasons for the council implementing this policy, perhaps to make sure employers were no longer able to discriminate against ethnic minorities for example, if that had been the case previously or maybe to ensure the local community was proportionately-represented. Maybe they are merely fulfilling an election promise and they are doing exactly what they promised the people who voted for them they would do? Whatever the reasons, it is a local political matter and the people who live there can vote (or protest) against it at the next opportunity (the only person I can think of who lives in that area is DOA but I don’t expect we’ll get any reasoned comments from him). Whatever the solution for the lovely people of Brighton, it is NOT going to be the fecking BNP, is it?
