I’ll agree, the election process in America is ridiculously protracted and unnecessarily long. I think they should put a 6 month limit on campaigning; in this day and age with the media technology we have, if someone can’t make their case in 6 months they don’t deserve to be running the country.
I’m an Obama supporter, but mainly because I don’t think America can afford another 4-8 years of Right-wing domestic and foreign policy. I do like Obama as a person and as a candidate, and there’s a certain gravity to him; but I wish he had a bit more experience as a legislator at the national level.
As far as Republicans go, if they simply MUST win again, I’d much rather have McCain over any other of the nut-jobs who sought the nomination this time around. I disagree with all his policies, but I respect the man and I at least think he would TRY to do the job well.
Most of my family, friends, and colleagues are voting for Obama. I’m from Boston Massachusetts which is generally one of the most liberal places in America. Everyone I know is VERY anxious about this election; and I share in that sentiment to a degree. But for the most part, regardless of the outcome I’ll breathe a sigh of relief because no matter who wins BUSH IS OUT!!!

In my opinion Britain is a far worse place now than it’s ever been having been subjected to 11 years of Labour rule.
Familiar with the Blitz are you? Think Political Correctness is tough? Try sleeping in the train tunnels. Let’s face it, compared to some points in the not so distant past, westerners of today really have nothing to complain about.
6 May, 2008 at 2:49 pm #333570Well in America we tend to have this perception that art causes bad behavior, especially in impressionable young people; as if teenagers didn’t care about sex before Elvis came along, or that the teen gang phenomenon can be traced DIRECTLY back to Tom and Jerry beating on each other in cartoons. The plain and simple truth is we Americans cling to ANYTHING that can function as an excuse for the un-checked instinctual behavior of our young people which results from the poor parenting that runs rampant in our culture. The fact is as much as kids like violent video games and sexually suggestive music they get MOST of their attitudes about right and wrong in the HOME from the adults and authority figures they have the most contact with. But of course when things go wrong, and kids turn to drugs, sex, and violence as an outlet or to get attention, it’s MUCH easier to point the finger at Quentin Tarentino, or Grand Theft Auto than to declare a “war on parents” or something like that. It would seem to me that sex, violence, and altering one’s consciousness through chemicals are all forces of human nature which go back well beyond the invention of video games and TV.
14 April, 2008 at 3:25 pm #325659Sure I thought it was hilarious. I liked that it poked fun at intellectualism, while also being genuinely funny and smart. Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce play brothers PERFECTLY, they really worked very well together. But all things considered I preferred Cheers; more variety of characters.

8 April, 2008 at 2:11 pm #324325It IS a tragic tale, and that woman is a Grade A nutjob for sure. But I have to be honest, after reading the whole article, the thing that REALLY resonated with me was that the judge’s name is Les Spittle.
8 April, 2008 at 1:51 pm #125920Well these are new song lyrics. Don’t have a recording of the song yet though. It’s sort of a lullaby for a child I don’t have yet… but I’m working on it.
“Paper Crane”
Make a poem of your life,
Scrawl it on a page,
Fold it like a paper crane,
And let it fly away.I will fetch it down for you,
Fix it to a tune,
Maybe add a line or two,
And sing it for the moon.Weave your life of cotton thread
Upon a spinning wheel.
Dye it all the colors of,
The many ways you feel.I will wash it out for you,
Hang it on a line.
Wrap it tight around myself,
And things will be just fine.8 April, 2008 at 1:41 pm #139591Pink Floyd “Time”
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the wayTired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gunAnd you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it’s sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you’re older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to deathEvery year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I’d something more to say2 April, 2008 at 6:47 pm #192433I’d say my overall favorite book is “Wonder Boys” by Michael Chabon. GREAT book. They made a really good movie out of it too; the film-makers captured the feel of the book pretty much perfectly.
Anyway the book has real style, and the story is fantastic too. I’ve read it 4 times and I can’t wait until the next time.
