Happy Diwali to everyone and anyone who celebrates this festival
I might google it one day to find out what it is. Or I may not.
If you are truly indifferent to what Diwali is, or the fact that other people do care, you could have just spotted the postings, carried on breathing, and moved on.
However by deliberately making the point that you may or may not bother to find out, you are making a strongly negative statement. An American might call it passive-aggressive, except to do it on the Boards you can’t be entirely passive.
Something clearly bothers you about references to Diwali, or makes you have to tell people that you don’t care one way or another about what they have posted. I’m not sure whether it is Diwali itself that troubles you or whether you just feel the need to burst another human being’s bubble.
Clearly it is not for me to know, but at this time of spiritual significance, I wonder if you are entirely at one with your inner light.

It’s Shami Chalkribati. And the human rights fiasco is something the wonderful Labour Party introduced.
The Labour Party are responsible for Human Rights? Wow!
Or do you mean that the Labour Party incorporated the European Convention on Human Rights, to which this country is a signatory, into British law to prevent cases going to the European Court the whole time. This reduces interference is our affairs by other countries.
You do know, of course, that the Convention and the Council of Europe have nothing to do with the EU, and that Britain was a founding member of the Council in May 1949. The members of the Council and their date of joining are listed here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Member_states_of_the_Council_of_Europe.
You are not of course advocating a withdrawal from one of the civilising forces in recent world history which binds the whole of Europe including Russia and Serbia together in common standards of human decency.
I do not agree with Qatada’s release and feel that we could all have been prevented huge expense by trying him here. Ministers, in this government and the last, seem to have been hell bent on deportation cos it looks better. We are also unwilling to offend Jordan, who are our friends but hardly have the human rights record of a European state such as us.
We could have resolved this issue many times over but instead, as a result of misjudgements and incompetence, we are left with this mess.
Oooooo, those damned human rights again!

Well tomorrow in England and Wales we get to vote for our very one Police and Crime Commissioner…are we all excited? Do we know what we’re voting for? Do you know who your candidates are? Will you be voting? Does anyone care?
Oh dear – I think that may be no six times.
Well I kinda know what it is but I really don’t think that a democratic election is the best way to choose these people.
We have councils for that kind of thing. Are we turning into the United States? We will be electing the head of the Crown Prosecution Service next and calling people District Attorneys.
More elections doesn’t mean more democracy if there isn’t an informed choice.

13 November, 2012 at 2:06 pm #515178Simplest and best.
- 1. Teach classes in English.
2. Teach English to kids who can’t speak it well enough, then return to the above.
Kids learn languages incredibly quickly if they are taught intensively enough (e.g. for at least half the school day). That way they don’t get held back too much.
Best outcome for everybody.
