Sorry Butterfly Angel if came across as ‘suspicious’!

I work in mental health and came across this story on the West London site yesterday. I didn’t know anything about the case, so googled ‘Peter Sutcliffe compensation’ and came across this thread. I don’t often post on message boards , but thought I’d let you know that the story was false as I thought if you used it as an example, it would hinder your case.

Btw, there’s a few references here to Broadmoor as a prison or part of the prison service. It’s not, it’s a high secure NHS hospital which treats people detained under the Mental Health Act. So the prison service would not be involved.

If the story is false, then why have their been over half a dozen tabloids quoting that he HAS received the amount without using the safety net of allegedly. They are putting their reputation on the line. I have checked this out thoroughly, and there is also a couple of MP’s who have quoted this story and they haven’t said allegedly either. So I think you ought to check your sources better. Are you aware that this payout was made in 2005 and it has taken 3 years to come out, and when the payout was made there was a lot of press surrounding it.

The statement I linked to is from the website of West London Mental Health Trust, which runs Broadmoor Hospital. It is categoric in what it says – no payment was sought and none was made. It appears to have been put out as a press release today, but I wouldn’t imagine it will get much coverage.

I have every sympathy with your fiance’s case and I think £40k is an inadequate payout given what has happened. But I don’t think you will get anywhere if you base your case on a compensation payout that never actually happened.

I’m afraid the reality is that the tabloids lie a lot and lies are repeated as fact if no-one challenges them. Suspect in this case the original story was based on false information and was never challenged until now. At very least, I’d check out the story with people other than the tabloids.

Huge sympathies to your fiance and I hope he gets justice, but you should both be aware that the Sutcliffe compensation story is a media invention.
