I think our athletes will be competing for GB and Northern Ireland and to me, the village is typically that of an English village (although it’s nothing like the Suffolk village I used to live in where the kids were usually stoned on the village green.)

There’s four nations that make up GB and Northern Ireland so why can’t the ceremony be representative of the cultures of each?

Moreover, it is not going to appeal to large sections of our multi cultural and multi class society.

As my work collague said, it looks like they got their inspiration from the Early Learning Centre.

I myself checked the date to make sure it wasn’t before midday on April 1st. :?

Oh I certainly agree with you there punda, and believe me I can be as instinctively cynical as most, although I do try to fight the urge.
The only difficulty I have with your point is the theory that more would be made of this in the media if it were anyone else. As you can see I believe the polar opposite to be true in this instance. Even without the conspiracy theories I simply can’t see it.
And why? Well, simply because it happens almost every day. I myself have seen similar instances. Never have I seen a rush of hacks though.. Unless in the event of extreme and/or tragic consequences.
But I’m ok with agreeing to disagree on that.

I see what you’re saying but I think the Tory machine went into action to make sure this wasn’t a big issue.

Anyone else? Well we have sad ppl in England who like their 15 mins of fame and like to make sure the local rags get to know about things and then of course you’ve got the local hacks wanting to get a splash in the nationals….

And if it’s a quiet news day then Joe or Joanna Bloggs find themselves catapulted into the media spotlight.

I thought England were lucky not to lose. Welbeck deflected a shot that was destined to make it 2.1 France.

Then there’s Milner’s poor finishing and sloppy back pass. I thought we looked better when Defoe came on.

And why won’t our players shoot from distance?

Maybe in two years time under Hodgson we’ll be a real force at the World Cup.

Well, the connections between politics and the media certainly can’t be denied, especially when one considers the events and revelations of recent years.
However I do find it mystifying to assume that anyone else in this instance would receive MORE media heat?
Wouldn’t that mean the papers would be bulging every week with such cases? Or am I not living in the real world?

I’m perhaps more cynical than you but the Tories and media mogul Murdoch are in bed together. Murdoch has his fingers in a lot of media pies…

who leaked the story?………….and why wait so long?

The former, I don’t know, the latter, well it’s old news, happened a few weeks ago, best reveal it when Brown is at the Leveson inquiry.

But seriously punda.. Do you honestly think that if it were any other family in this instance, there would be MORE media attention?

    Yes.

Not a lot of media attention in this case due to a media cover up.

Who pulls the media strings in this country?

Would Cameron have been so forgetful if the minimum pricing plan for alcohol had been in place? :-
