24 November, 2007 at 6:45 pm #293735One of the most painful ones i remember was when i was a kid. It had been raining and i was wearing black plimsoles (the shame of it!)  i thought it would be a good idea to walk along the inch thick garden fence just for a laugh
Sadly i slipped (no one saw that coming eh) and fell between the fence and the fence post…and although im slim, lets just say the gap between the two was a little tight. It scraped all up my ribcage and i collapsed winded in a heap on the floor unable to breathe..i felt like i was dying! My sypathetic friends stood over me in hysterics. I was black and blue and in much discomfort for weeks after!

I think what the government is trying to do is get people back to work.
Sickness benefit covers things from alcohol abuse to bad backs, mental illness to transplants.
It’s a general term that covers lots of long-term illness.
So you have to ask the question, if someone is depressed, should they be sat at home all day?
If someone is waiting for a liver transplant, are they unable to work?
I think if you have the chance to work, you should.
People on sickness benefit make up reasons why they can’t work, it’s about time we gave them reasons to work.
Most illness cost money to treat; health works are not free, why not hand out a bit of money to keep people on sickness benefit happy, withdraw treatment and right them off?
Why are we spending money on treatment for people who will never work again?
I agree about the depression, sitting at home all day can only make it worse, although being at work isnt the answer either. Counselling is probably their best bet, or failing that some good old fashioned exercise to stimulate the brain chemicals which make you feel happier.
As for the liver transplant comment, of course a person cant work if they are ill enough to need a new liver for gods sake!
Terminally ill people who have worked hard all their lives and paid national insurance are entitled to treatment, otherwise whats the point in paying national insurance in the first place if you cant rely upon it in your time of need. As for people who have never done a days work through sheer laziness, they shouldnt be entitled to free treatment!

22 November, 2007 at 2:25 pm #293489its about time the government got tougher when it comes to handing out benefits. Of course there are genuine people out there who deserve the money they get, but theres also countless scumbags who lie their way through these assessments because they are too lazy to get off their backsides and get a job. I used to have a neighbour who claimed he couldnt work because of his bad back (that old chestnut.) It didnt stop him spending a full day laying slabs on his front garden though…funny how he miraculously recovered isnt it?!
If you see anyone doing the same, capture the ba stard on your mobile phone and send it in to the fraud department
