On a more serious note …bladder infections can be quite painful although easy to treat and are common in the elderly especially when they don’t take in enough fluids or hold back from going to the loo.
It is common in older men, affecting 10 per cent of all those over the age of 80, and while painful relatively easy to treat if caught early with antibiotics.
However, according to doctors it can indicate underlying health problems which need to be investigated.
One cause for cystitis is a problem with urinating which means that the bladder does not empty properly.
This is common in pregnant women, but can also be caused by an enlarged prostate gland in men, a condition that also becomes much more common as men get older.
Cystitis in men should always be referred to a doctor for appropriate investigation and treatment.
Doctors recommend drinking at least eight glasses of water a day and taking trips to the lavatory as soon as people feel the need, rather than holding back.
Holding off going to the lavatory can exaccerbate the condition, though it is not an underlying cause.
Dr Camilleri-Ferrante, a Consultant in Public Health Medicine, said: “It is possible that fluid intake was reduced both prior to and during the parade.
“It is possible that the Duke resisted going to the lower deck in order not to miss any part of the parade.
“It is also possible that, if there is some underlying problem, this was exacerbated.”
She said it is unlikely that too long on deck was a direct cause.
“Most infection is due to a number of factors coming together, making a good opportunity for the bacteria to multiply,”
