Very balanced.

Self declared enemies? What other definition is there of an enemy exactly? They all declare themselves enemies when fighting do they not? Wouldn’t be much point otherwise.
Security Council resolutions, more violated by Israel and vetoed by the USA than any other country in the world. Take a look at violated resolutions by neighbouring countries as opposed to Israel and weigh up the evidence. See which country blocks or veto’s more resolutions than any other of the permanent security council. The report is here (pdf format).
Poor Israel and their heartbreaking plight huh? When people feel helpless they resort to whatever is necessary. When it comes to the point you are willing to lose your life, that is the ultimate sacrifice and in the case of palestinians, desperation. However looking from both camps, yet again it is ever decreasing circles. Two races that hate each other, have no trust of each other, and will not settle differences.
I wrote armed by their self-declared enemies. I know things are moving fast but I’m pretty sure a shooting war hasn’t broken out between Israel and Iran! That hasn’t stopped Iran declaring themselves (self-declared) the enemies of Israel and calling for Israel to be wiped off the map. Being too cowardly to do anything about it themselves, however, they prefer to use terrorist proxies like Hezbollah to do their dirty work.
Also, my note about the Security Council resolutions was posted to show that these work both ways. As your link shows, all countries routinely ignore UN resolutions unless force is threatened, not just Israel and, as you point out, the USA, as part of the P5, routinely vetoes forcible resolutions aimed against Israel, rendering them worthless.
At least you are beginning to realise there are two sides to the mess now. A climbdown from your previous rabid position that is to be welcomed.
Sweetasbaileez, many of the people who are being rescued are dual citizens of both Lebanon and the UK, simply visiting family and loved ones. We can’t go around telling people where they can and can’t be visiting. This is a free country – the government simply doesn’t have the right to do that – they can only advise through the Foreign Office reports. I think there is a difference in putting yourself in direct danger by visiting a war zone and simply getting caught up in an outbreak of violence. In either case, as a British subject you are entitled to expect that Her Majesty’s government will do their best to help you out if it is at all possible.
Which brings me to Mr Bigstuff’s points. Attempting to extract British subjects from southern Lebanon at the moment without the cooperation of the Israelis would be plain foolhardy. Quite frankly, if the idea is to safeguard British lives, it is safer for them to stay put until such cooperation can be negotiated. It’s nothing to do with ‘not having the balls’. As for resolution 242, Fester’s link makes clear that it is debatable as to whether Israel is in non-compliance. Further, Israel is not ‘laying waste’ to Lebanon. This emotive language gets us nowhere. Some three hundred people have been killed in Lebanon by Israeli action. If genocide was the aim of the Israelis then, given the operational abilities of the Israeli armed forces, we could expect many more dead than that.
20 July, 2006 at 9:29 am #230730:-s Those people didn’t visit a war zone and expect to be rescued, they were there when violence erupted. Of course they deserve to be evacuated by their country if it is possible. Further, if people join the armed forces then they do as they’re told, whether they agree with it or not. That’s the cost of the Queen’s shilling.
As for the Israeli action itself, it all seems perfectly predictable to me, if customarily heavy handed. They have been attacked by forces armed by their self-declared enemies and hosted in a neighbouring country which has done little or nothing to curb the presence of an extra-governmental army within their borders, despite Security Council resolutions instructing them otherwise.
Imagine if Ipswich and Norwich were being bombarded by hundreds of rockets from the Dutch coast and the Dutch government simply said there was nothing they could do. Imagine if an army of extremist Dutch* financed and armed by Germany and France had conducted raids on the Essex coast and kidnapped two squaddies from Colchester to God knows what fate. Would you be pleased to see a British government simply sit on its hands? Or would you want to take action against the Dutch extremists, their sponsors and the Dutch government? Such is the plight of Israel.
* Unlikely, I know. The Dutch only get extremist when they move to Africa. I think it’s because their spliff supplies get cut off. But it’s an analogy. And unlikely analogies have served their purpose for a long time now.
19 July, 2006 at 12:12 am #231636Mysterious Yet Dashing Young Gent Foils Girls Aloud Kidnap Plot
Girls Aloud were last night sensationally saved from a dastardly plot to kidnap them by a handsome stranger who intervened heroically on their behalf.
The luscious girls, currently touring the world to promote their new album, were almost the victims of a cunning Islamic extremist plot to hold them for possibly brainwashing into suicide bombers – a process that would probably have involved repeatedly ravishing their young, nubile bodies. We can also exclusively reveal that if the brainwashing – due to be performed in a council semi in Coventry – had not been considered successful, the sexy young minxes would almost certainly have been passed on to Al Qaeda mastermind Osama Bin Laden himself to fulfill his perverted desires.
The drama unfurled last night as the saucy girls’ tour bus passed through the well heeled Hampshire resort town of Lee on the Solent – considered by many to be the town that Monaco models itself on. As the bus slowed to avoid what seemed to be a minor accident in the road ahead, eight crazy, AK47 armed jihadists ambushed the bus and ordered the startled driver to head for the Midlands.
Luckily for the girls a dapper looking young man, dressed in a pin stripe suit and bowler hat – who later would only identify himself as the Pikester – happened to be ambling past the horrifying scene with his fashionable Glen of Imaal Terrier. According to the shocked, yet still lust inspiring girls, this stranger launched himself into action with cries of They don’t like it up ’em! and Take that, Abdul, you cad!
Despite only being armed with an umbrella, this young gent was able to overcome the warped tea-towel wearing terrorists in short order, much to the relief and gratitude of the foxy quintet.
Nicola gushed, ‘It was amazing, I’ve never seen anything like it. He didn’t even fight dirty like Cheryl does.’
Sarah added, ‘Yeah. You don’t often see violence carried out with so much sophistication and charm. I got quite damp.’
Cheryl sensationally claimed that, ‘I would definitely chuck Ashley for him. He’s got my number and I’m hoping he’ll give me a call. He said he couldn’t promise anything because he’s so busy but I’ll be hoping and waiting.’
Nadine said, ‘Seeing a man like that makes you wonder whether anyone one else will ever impress you again. I’m thinking of turning lezza so as to avoid disappointment in the future.’
Kimberley went on, ‘Even the nips of gin that he gave us from his hip-flask to calm us after the ordeal seemed of a superior quality. The man was just pure class. I’m certainly glad that the five of us managed to give him a good time in gratitude. It was the least we could do, really. He just tipped his hat, wished us all a good night and walked off down the road afterwards but none of us can walk properly even now. What a guy! I did feel a bit sorry for his dog tied up outside the bus for so long, though.’
18 July, 2006 at 7:55 am #230782Cool, Manners. We’ll look forward to pinching him, then.
18 July, 2006 at 7:49 am #230876:-s It’s all balls, anyway. There’s nothing wrong with the place. I’ll never understand the need for whining. If you don’t like it, go and post somewhere else.

Bluster is a wonderful thing but what do you say to Bigstuff’s points? Precious little, judging by your responses and there lies the point.
