just a couple of points that I think are relevant
brands relationship with the woman had been the subject of a joke running for weeks BEFORE andrew sachs agent booked him to appear (by phone) on the programme. Any agent worth their salt would have known this and briefed their client.
brands show is aired after 10pm AND after a warning that listeners may be offended by the content
the phone calls were an ad lib section of the show, a filler neccessary because andrew sachs had pulled out at the last minute (of course he is perfectly entitled to do this), this was not something scripted, edited and reviewed before its performance…spontaneous humour just does tend to run nearer the mark
neither brand nor ross produce their own shows, the overall control over what is broadcast lies with others
andrew sachs is very far from being some doddery old fart, completely out of touch with current culture and humour, the tone of his portrayal in the press has crossed the border into ageism
andrew sachs was asked if he gave his permission for those calls to be aired, he gave it….he did ask for some editing, but he was happy with the overall tone
Those points made, I found the “joke” tasteless (as indeed it was when brand made comments about sleeping with rod stewarts daughter at the brits) and immature, just not as tasteless and immature as the collossal over reaction …that I’m now adding to.
