Self declared enemies? What other definition is there of an enemy exactly? They all declare themselves enemies when fighting do they not? Wouldn’t be much point otherwise.

Security Council resolutions, more violated by Israel and vetoed by the USA than any other country in the world. Take a look at violated resolutions by neighbouring countries as opposed to Israel and weigh up the evidence. See which country blocks or veto’s more resolutions than any other of the permanent security council. The report is here (pdf format).

Poor Israel and their heartbreaking plight huh? When people feel helpless they resort to whatever is necessary. When it comes to the point you are willing to lose your life, that is the ultimate sacrifice and in the case of palestinians, desperation. However looking from both camps, yet again it is ever decreasing circles. Two races that hate each other, have no trust of each other, and will not settle differences.

I wrote armed by their self-declared enemies. I know things are moving fast but I’m pretty sure a shooting war hasn’t broken out between Israel and Iran! That hasn’t stopped Iran declaring themselves (self-declared) the enemies of Israel and calling for Israel to be wiped off the map. Being too cowardly to do anything about it themselves, however, they prefer to use terrorist proxies like Hezbollah to do their dirty work.

Also, my note about the Security Council resolutions was posted to show that these work both ways. As your link shows, all countries routinely ignore UN resolutions unless force is threatened, not just Israel and, as you point out, the USA, as part of the P5, routinely vetoes forcible resolutions aimed against Israel, rendering them worthless.

At least you are beginning to realise there are two sides to the mess now. A climbdown from your previous rabid position that is to be welcomed.

Sweetasbaileez, many of the people who are being rescued are dual citizens of both Lebanon and the UK, simply visiting family and loved ones. We can’t go around telling people where they can and can’t be visiting. This is a free country – the government simply doesn’t have the right to do that – they can only advise through the Foreign Office reports. I think there is a difference in putting yourself in direct danger by visiting a war zone and simply getting caught up in an outbreak of violence. In either case, as a British subject you are entitled to expect that Her Majesty’s government will do their best to help you out if it is at all possible.

Which brings me to Mr Bigstuff’s points. Attempting to extract British subjects from southern Lebanon at the moment without the cooperation of the Israelis would be plain foolhardy. Quite frankly, if the idea is to safeguard British lives, it is safer for them to stay put until such cooperation can be negotiated. It’s nothing to do with ‘not having the balls’. As for resolution 242, Fester’s link makes clear that it is debatable as to whether Israel is in non-compliance. Further, Israel is not ‘laying waste’ to Lebanon. This emotive language gets us nowhere. Some three hundred people have been killed in Lebanon by Israeli action. If genocide was the aim of the Israelis then, given the operational abilities of the Israeli armed forces, we could expect many more dead than that.

i still think a total ban on uk citizens visiting there whatever their reasons’would be appropriate..if they’re not there, our boys don’t have to go and get them :D. besides that you only have to visit H  :D ove to see half of the arab population have moved there

blimey dont say that ?! i have the new norton which seems to be pretty effective so far, but i do scan all my films before opening them though.. and at the risk of sounding a complete div..what exactly does the firewall do ??

You don’t have one and you’re using P2P programs??????

    At least go here:

    http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

If you do have one go here to find out what it does:

    http://www.homenethelp.com/web/explain/about-firewalls.asp

I don’t want to worry, just warn. But look here:
    http://www.parentsformeganslaw.com/html/message.lasso?action=detail&uid=19

Also, Bearshare, and many others, downloads other software that monitors your internet browsing and feeds information back to advertising companies.

You may want to look for spyware monitoring/removal tools when you are using P2P programs.

I REALLY don’t mean to frighten. Millions of people, me included, use P2P. You DO have to get a bit savvy though.

:-s Those people didn’t visit a war zone and expect to be rescued, they were there when violence erupted. Of course they deserve to be evacuated by their country if it is possible. Further, if people join the armed forces then they do as they’re told, whether they agree with it or not. That’s the cost of the Queen’s shilling.

As for the Israeli action itself, it all seems perfectly predictable to me, if customarily heavy handed. They have been attacked by forces armed by their self-declared enemies and hosted in a neighbouring country which has done little or nothing to curb the presence of an extra-governmental army within their borders, despite Security Council resolutions instructing them otherwise.

Imagine if Ipswich and Norwich were being bombarded by hundreds of rockets from the Dutch coast and the Dutch government simply said there was nothing they could do. Imagine if an army of extremist Dutch* financed and armed by Germany and France had conducted raids on the Essex coast and kidnapped two squaddies from Colchester to God knows what fate. Would you be pleased to see a British government simply sit on its hands? Or would you want to take action against the Dutch extremists, their sponsors and the Dutch government? Such is the plight of Israel.

    * Unlikely, I know. The Dutch only get extremist when they move to Africa. I think it’s because their spliff supplies get cut off. But it’s an analogy. And unlikely analogies have served their purpose for a long time now.

i understand what you’re saying. i simply said that i don’t believe that british people should be allowed to travel to the middle east, where war has been raging, through one faction or another for years ! as for a holiday destination would they travel to serbia, bosnia, kosova, belfast, rowanda, somalia etc etc etc . and as far as im concerned, with the terrosist organisations building up a precedence in the british isle, the governmemt would be better to sort them out instead fo fighting a war that really has nothing to do with us. maybe if the british government used our soldiers to protect us, we wouldn’t have had the atrocities of the london bombings.. people were quick enough to condemn MR BIgley who went and got himself beheaded, with comments such as ‘why was he there in the first place’… ‘why should we risk our soldiers lives to save him when he was aware of the risks … why should the same not apply to these citizens ?? i ask not to get your back up, but because your conversation is interesting and intelligent, plus i mite learn a thing or two ! i’ve been watching the rescue on tv today and i had to ask myself, would i, as a parent, bring my child, (whether it be a holiday, visiting family, or religious reasons) to a place that i was aware was as volatile as the majority of the middle east is…plus they bloody hate the english ! so surely by visiting these countries… aren’t you asking for trouble. ??
