This is the first time a female British swimmer has done the double in more than a hundred years. The fear that the Jocks, Taffs and Paddy’s have, and quite rightly so, is that FIFA will rescinder their FA’s and it will be all consumed by a British FA, which the English FA won’t have anyway. It’s a political thing and the trouble is this group of countries collectively known as GB and Northern Ireland compete on the world stage in many sports as one union. Football doesn’t afford that and we aren’t allowed to compete as four FA’s. And because FIFA are the most powerful sporting association in the world, nobody can really stand up to them. That is why they are talking about having an English FA side competing as GB in 2012.
Incidentally, GB won the first ever Olympic Football gold.
