From what I’ve read and I’ve looked up links besides the one’s that Emma provided, Brighton have used a legal loophole to bar Mr Keenan from even applying. The post should have been made applicable to all those that were eligible regardless of ethnic minority. It used to be the best person qualified for the job, now it seems that it’s only the person with the right ethnic background in this case. Brighton Council has to been seen to have enough people of diverse backgrounds. Colour of someones skin should not come into a job, it should be on how qualified they are. I doubt my opinion will suit, but I am of the opinion that colour, race, shouldn’t come into applying for a job. I whole heartedly agree that people have been barred in the past from jobs merely because of the colour of their skin. But this is the 21st century, aren’t we meant to have moved on from all this now, and see people as individuals, not make decisions on them purely by the colour of their skin. If Mr Keenen didn’t qualify to apply for the post because it was a work placement, then he should have been told that. He should not have been told it was due to his skin colour. This has been badly handled and Brighton Council should apologise.
Doesn’t surprise me one bit, but at least when a site in this country is reported it’s shut down almost immediately, something we can be proud of!!
