Do the horses really need to be put down
It depends on the injury pete, very often if a horse breaks a leg because of their weight it breaks in more than one place and very often breaks through the skin and splinters, this itself can cause infection and further suffering unlike dogs they dont do well trying to distribute around 1000lbs of body weight on 3 legs.
You cant easily put a horse in plaster and keep them from moving they have to be put in slings to keep the weight off and the facilities for physio in water is usually required for a semi full recovery after, a facility alot of people dont have.
The hardest thing to achieve is to keep the animal still and rested enough to allow the bones to set and that is if you have managed to move the animal to a place they can be put in a sling without doing further damage to the original break or fracture which is what very often happens.
Also long term they tend to spend the rest of their lives suffering from such injury due to poor bone infusion which isn’t fair on the animal.poli you always make a lot of sense to me.
xand thank you pebs I’ve learnt a lot from this thread

I think that sad imbecilic couple thought that they might be able to play the media after watching the aweful Maddy case and seeing monies going to the parents and that ;thay might ;be able to nic some cash….the sad w*nkersLooks like the most obvious answer to the whole sorry saga. The fact that Shannon was, thankfully, found alive was an alarming fact in itself. The fact that the stepfathers family are now implicated in her dissapearance allied to the the vast publicity involved in the McCann case would lead me to guess that this was originally an attempt to cash in, and family members have certainly been doing that already by selling stories to the media even while the hunt was going on.
There has been a concensus on these boards that there must be more to come out of this whole sorry saga and it looks like most of us were right. What a sad sad indictment on our society this bloody mess is – there are implications here that go beyond pathetic, greedy uneducated folk dependant on welfare.

Well, the pre WW2 generation would have been bullied at school if their parents were divorced, or if their mother wasn’t married.
Times change.
So true, and what was swept under the carpet generations ago are today’s social battlecries. Because in that respect we’ve evolved have we? Looking only through the eyes of 2008 at any issue can be incredibly unhelpful, however much we parade our opinions and then feel so superior for doing so. Only love and the will to survive is unchanging, eternal.
We shall, in all probability, listen to our grown-up children and grandchildren one day espouse views that will shock us. Hard to do on a message board, but it’s best to be as nonjudgmental as possible in life for others can or will point fingers at any one of us. Or as mims said, try and find some empathy with others.
Rant over…… Open your minds ras-claats !!………….
