Bags are to be put over scores of surveillance cameras in parts of Birmingham with large Muslim populations, after local objections.It seems that the issue is predominantly that the funding for the cameras was secured through a counter-terrorism fund, however the cameras will be used for all crime, not just terrorism. So because it’s a predominantly muslim community and the funding came from a counter-terrorism fund, the cameras are now to be covered up pending a public consultation. And what happens if the public that are consulted object? Will the cameras be removed? Can we now have retrospective public consultation in all areas where cameras have already been installed regardless of the religious or ethnic makeup of that community? Or is it only muslims that have these rights?
I have no axe to grind with any religious or ethnic group, I believe that all people should be treated equally in all aspects of life. I detest “positive discrimination” whoever it is directed at – discrimination is discrimination, however you dress it up. However once you start showing excessive sensitivity towards one group, whether they request it or not, then you lose that balance, equality goes out of the window, and resentment starts to set in.

WE have to put up with this everyday, being part of A Big Brother Society, wherever we go, we’re constantly monitored.When they first installed a CCTV camera in a residential area where I am from, there was a lot of fuss, but the thing is, they say that the cameras are there just for one purpose.. That’s bo llocks! The Department Of Social Security get a lot of the fraudsters by working with the authorities, involving THESE cameras!!
WE ALL KNOW that the cameras are not for one purpose. In a way – these cameras can help a lot. If i’m being mugged in the street, i’d be safe in the knowledge that there are cameras out there that are picking up on the attack, aswell as the other cameras that can monitor where the attackers are going, and so on.
There have been cases where controllers have abused their positions and purpose of these cameras.. WE AS A BRITISH NATION HAVE NO SAY – SO WHAT MAKES THEM THINK THEY HAVE A RIGHT TO MAKE DEMANDS?Oh, and as for these cameras being covered up, lets see if something happens to them now that they’ve ordered this.., attacks in their streets – anything crime related, then what are they going to do? Complain because ‘they’ didn’t have the right protection, eg, ten police cars patrolling the area day in day out?!
