    you get the drift.

Actually Panda I think that Black History Month is quite valid and not racist. The problem is though that whenever something like this is celebrated it opens the flood gates for racist comments and abuse so I suppose in a way it inadvertently encourages racism.

As I understand it….and I could be wrong one of the main reasons for having the history month is to educate and inform all of us on the contribution that black people have made throughout history. I sort of agree with Morgan freeman who said why do we need just one month to celebrate it? but thinking about it black history has been neglected especially in schools so its no bad thing to bring it to the fore.

Should it just be history though? maybe it should celebrate black culture and history generally

I imagine that racism would find an excuse without Black History Month, so I don’t really think it ‘encourages’ it. A good friend of mine says reading “Roots” opened her eyes to a whole different experience in a really positive way. Black History Month can enrich the lives of anyone who engages with it. It usually celebrates wider cultures and encourages a different reading of history in general, as it doesn’t simply focus on the conquerors.

I hope we can welcome a day when we don’t need a special month for neglected areas of history, when young people are supplied with answers which links them and the people around them to the past. I believe this is done better now than when I was in school.

some who dont own a car might be glad of a lada

i mean would a lada make it from wolverhampton to derbyshire 8)

Would I drive a Midnight Blue Lada with cream interior? Heck yeah! It sounds wonderfully retro, of course I’m not 17, but even then I’m sure I was contrary enough to do it if I had the chance.

Excuse me a sentimental hijack. I’ve never owned a LADA, but I’ve heard the same jokes about Skodas and I do own an old Skoda which has taken me up and down and across the country, including what I like to call the Black Bess run, London to York, (named after Dick Turpin’s horse I hastily add).

It’s the first car I ever owned; I’ve paid for a few cars, but passed my test late in life, Like most first cars it is well loved despite the lumps and bumps I’ve added he’s been like a partner in crime and I even named him. But I’ve been told the rust bug means he won’t pass another MOT and I’m mourning him already.

Eastern Europeans and people who work with motors tend to praise the car. Friends who drive less flash motors but are used to seeing me in a suit tell me it’s time I got something more prestigious (not difficult . . . )

In his honour, I’d like to add a few Skolada jokes (Skoda + LADA, geddit?):

How do you double the price of a Skolada?
    Fill up the tank

Have you got a wing mirror for a Skolada?
Okay, seems like a fair swap

What do you call a Skolada driver who say’s he has a speeding ticket ?
    A Dreamer

How do you double the value of a Skolada?
Chuck a penny in it (mine was given to me by a friend who couldn’t sell it, so more than true)

I’ve just bought the new 16 valve Skolada …….4 in the engine, 12 in the radio! (If you understand this and your under 40 then you need to get out more

What is the difference between being inside Katy Price’s bra and being caught inside a Skolada?
You feel a bigger t1t in a Skolada ! (as to getting to second base in it: a gentleman never tells, and a bounder never denies, but we’re both open to offers – twirls moustache).

Why is a Skolada and a baby similar?
They both never go anywhere without a rattle (True!)

What is the difference between a school and a Skolada?
Schools breaks up and a Skolada breaks down (not yet!)

How do you make a Skolada more sporty?
Wear adidas trainers while driving it (Although I think I was wearing loafers when mine did “the legal limit + 10%”)

    Just for the record friends..
Northern Ireland isn’t actually in Britain. It is part of the UK (that of course being the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland). However, A great deal of Northern Irish natives consider themselves British (which is of course their right and certainly sounds better than UKish).
Like most things Irish, it is rather confusing.

Donegal on the other hand is definitely NOT British.
    Shame on you Eve

It’s still pretty though and you don’t need a passport to get there from Britain.

Neither of which has ever been in doubt :)

Very true. I put a more po-faced comment in “Anything you like” as I didn’t want to spoil this thread. I might use it to plan a few road trips before my beloved li’l ole car finally goes to the great motorway in the sky . . . .

Hey, political boundaries are a record of the last conquest/treaty. Nationality is about the soul of a people and those with whom you share your dreams.

The degree to which it’s all part hokum is demonstrated by the fact you can be part of the United Kingdom, have a whole army fighting to keep you under the flag, but not be officially “in Britain”. On the other hand you can have your own language and history, not be represented in the flag but be “in Britain” and have the heir to the British throne as your prince.
