Are people required to have a medical before a firearms certificate is issued? I don’t know for certain, but I’m not sure they are.

As for mental illness, I think that when you apply for a licence or a renewal, you’re just asked a series of questions, one of which is mental health problems within the family. I suppose it’s up to the individual how honest they are.

As Lady Kenty (OBE) rightly points out, mental illness can come along and take a grip very quickly.

I’m not a lover of guns I have to admit. No different from knives, if they’re about your person and trouble strikes, the chances are you’ll use it before you have time to think of the consequences.

Not sure Uni, but if you don’t need a medical how scarey is that!!

Well I’ve had a chat to my local Firearms Enquiry Officer, and you don’t need always need a medical to obtain a firearms certificate. However, when you apply for one, or renew your licence, a letter will go to your doctor to ask if there’s any reason you shouldn’t have one, and there are lots of reasons people are refused.

For example – if you’ve been diagnosed with a possibly fatal disease (eg cancer) your doctor will be asked to comment on the state of your mental health.

There was also a question on whether a woman who had been raped should be granted a licence. Ultimately she was, but because she was shooting as part of the England shooting squad. Had she not been, she may well have been refused.

Can’t really remember what else he told me….

New here, hey everyone! I don’t see politicians tightening up gun laws anytime soon here in the US much less banning them, even-though, according to the NRA’s batsh@% crazy minions Obama has been plotting and conniving to pry every last gun from their hands, if only. I currently live in Texas and if it wasn’t bad enough our new whack job of a Governor, Greg Abbott, just signed a bill to make open carry legal here. ](*,) You have the money and no felonies you can pretty much get a gun here.

    Hi, tamwam…welcome to the boards.

Texas must be the worst place for gun control laws…the USA as a whole seems gun-crazy to we Brits.

The UK goes too much the opposite way, in my opinion, which is what the discussion here has turned on.
