The death of eight horses in the first three days of the Cheltenham Festival is to be investigated by organisers.
Two animals died in the first two days while three horses died in Thursday’s fifth race alone.

Sh Boom, who fell during the Ladbrokes World Hurdle, died as a result of his injuries overnight on Thursday.

Animal rights group Animal Aid has called for the public to boycott the meeting, which concludes on Friday.

“The going is good, no faster, and we are satisfied there isn’t a problem with the ground,” said the racecourse’s managing director Edward Gillespie.

Record field set for Gold Cup
“While the death of any horse is very regrettable, there is no evidence to link them in any way.

“We have had a large entry for many races this season and I think that is a factor.”

But Animal Aid director Andrew Tyler said: “There is no justification for events such as this to continue while routinely horses are dying.”

Millenaire, Basilea Star and Mr Babbage all died in Thursday’s National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup while two more – Holy Orders in the third and Olaso in the last – broke bones in their legs and were destroyed.

It was the worst one-day death toll at the Festival for 20 years.

I was quite shocked when I read about these horses dying. I had never paid much consideration to this in the past, but I actually find this sport slightly uncomfortable to watch, especially when the horses are whipped. Shouldn’t horses be happily chewing grass and enjoying their lives peacefully in fields?

we could say the same thing about pigs, sheep, lambs, cows… ect ect

we can’t eat horses (unless you are really hungry) so what other use are they to human nature?

not being cruel, just pointing out the facts here

In some countries like japan dogs are kept purely to be eaten – in fact they are a specialty and cost alot of money to eat, no one says anything like this about the poor dogs, and these dogs are kept in cages all there life.

At least the horses get to run around eat grass and hump each other and get buried whole when they die.

The poor dogs end up in a friggin cookin pan then in some feckers gullit then in some sewer.

Think next time you goto Japan you could be eating Lassie

I had a horse steak for tea tonite. Its much softer than your conventional steaks but just as tasty.

And no I dont agree that horses should die in the name of sport but they are just as edible as any of the other animals u mentioned.

So an animal is only useful if you can eat it? There is no other pleasure to be gained from them ? we might as well become like Japan then and start eating dogs, how about cats? should we eat them too?
