    Hi everyone,

    Please bear with me on this as it’s a bit complicated.

    I have a dual boot hd that I recently put on XP Pro on both partitions (clean install). labelled C: and F:

    I also have an external hd with XP home. labelled G:, OK, here goes….

    I tried to open the external G: and the POST stopped seconds in saying that the VGA.FON was missing or corrupted. I tried the advice on the Microsoft site by using the EXPAND command in DOS, and tried to copy the file from the CD. It said that the path was wrong (it wasn’t).

    Then a couple of days later, when trying to boot C: or F:, they both went through the POST, and when the Windows logo appeared, the screen went blank, but windows still loaded (I could hear the sound).

    Obviously a corrupt driver all of a sudden with video card (Nvidia Ge Force TI 200).

    I tried to go into safe mode, but it did not complete the boot, hanging when a list of drivers were being shown.

    Btw, also tried ENABLE VGA, and SYSTEM RESTORE, all to no avail.

    Ah ha, I thought. I replaced the 64 meg AGP card with a very old 4 meg PCI card.

    Bingo, it let me in both C: and F: using ENABLE VGA, where I uninstalled the card and disabled the driver in DEVICE MANAGER.

    I swapped back the cards, and can now successfully get into C:, having got the latest driver from Nvidia, but still cannot load F: using any method, SAFE, ENABLE VGA or otherwise. I have retrieved the data on F:, by opening it up when running C: and copying it.

    If your still with me on this, has anyone any ideas of how to run F:

    I really don’t want to redo the whole damn thing again, hours and hours of stuff on there.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks for reading this, you deserve a medal!!

    I got a bit lost, but why the need to have the same operating system on two partitions?

    I always get confused by this, maybe there is a conflict on your system.. I dunno.. I’m just guessing cause I’m not the most knowledgeable person

    Hi soulie,

    Where’s your sig gone??

    No, there’s no conflict.

    The reason for the two partitions (in my case), is that one is for online gaming, and the other for the normal stuff.

    I also back up on the other partition, in case the other fails (as in this case?).

    some people create 4/5 partitions, one for programs, the others for pictures, music and other data etc.

    i see.. well i got a couple.. one for my backup files… so when ever i wanna re install.. its easy just to put everything onto my backup drive.. never thought about having the same operating system on another partition, might just do that though, keep one side clean :)

    my sig, i got rid..its under construction :)

    It obviously sounds like you have config problems on drive F.

    I dont care what anyone says i dont like running two OS on the same HDD dual or basic. Im not knocking you it’s just my personal choice to keep all OS on a seperate HDD.

    I have two OS on my system and i config my system like this. I never have any issues like you’ve experienced.

    C:=Program files for XP.
    E:= Windows XP OS.
    F:=External HDD with Linux Redhat OS.

    I use Acronis for my HDD management.
