Hasn’t stopped a lot of opera people slumming it in the Charleston swamps, though.

Mr G wanted to be a serious classical composer, and to write popular music at the same time. The result was this ‘folk opera’.

What was revolutionary about it at the time (1935) was the all-black cast.

But what was needed was a voice like Rebecca Ferguson’s.
