Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is going to sign his new contract on Friday after an incredible week at Anfield.

Having told the club he was leaving then having a dramatic change of heart 24 hours later, Reds’ fans will be anxious until the moment their hero puts pen to paper on his deal.

It is reportedly worth £100,000-a-week for the next four years – about £50,000-a-week less than the offer Real Madrid were said to be preparing.

Gerrard also admits he offered to give up the captaincy after the week’s events.

“It would have broken my heart to have lost the captaincy but I thought it was right to make the offer,” he said.

Manager Rafa Benitez turned him down and admitted his skipper’s decision to stay was a “boost for everyone at the club”.

The sums being banded about as offers from other clubs are commonplace when agents are trying to renegotiate new contracts for players: “You must pay my player this much money cos he can get that at another club”. He wasn’t offered a contract with Real Madrid so it’s pure speculation what he would have got there had he joined them but it was probably enough for the player and his agent to get Liverpool to vastly increase their original offer. I imagine he got image rights at Liverpool too, something he wouldn’t get at Real.

He is like any player, he will be ‘Loyal’ as long as the money is right. Can’t say I blame him btw and clubs have no right to expect blind loyalty either – maybe that’s what pi ssed Gerrard off in the first place, the fact he felt he was being taken for granted as a ‘fan’ of the club.

Liverpool never increased their offer. If u read your own link he was offered 100,000 pounds. If u read my link… he ACCEPTED 100,000 pounds “dispite” better offers from other clubs.

So lets re-cap shall we…@james Belfast wrote:

If he was the best player in the world he wouldn’t be playing for Liverpool, would he? Fact.

He has had plenty of opportunity to move to a bigger club but “chose” to stay with Liverpool.

I never said he would be a better player if he played for Juve or the scum (whoever they are). I said if he WAS a better player, he would have been signed by a bigger team. The fact that he doesn’t play for Milan, Juve, Chelsea, Barcelona or Real Madrid (to name but 5 better teams than Liverpool) tells you all you need to know.

Two of the above mentioned teams offered him a deal. “HE” turned them down and “NOT” the other way round.

Gerrard stayed at Liverpool for the money that was “first” offered to him. Yes an increase on what he was already earning but u tell me a player that doesn’t get a pay rise with a new deal. If it was just the money he was interested in he would have left!!

Now James…. I believe the Scottish football league started yesterday. Maybe u should concentrate a little more on your own country and stop trying to inform us of how OUR country is fairing..

Yup! Proper footy started yesterday wooohooo. I see Liverpool managed to avoid Hearts in last week’s draw so they will have a chance of reaching the group stages. Maybe we’ll meet there!! I will try to avoid getting involved in English football debates in future as I obviously know feck all about it (having only lived in this country for a mere 30 years).

yeah yeah Herman. On reflection tho, I have been a bit harsh with Gerrard, I know he is Liverpool through and through and I shouldn’t knock him too much. He IS a great player and God knows what was going through his head last year. I am glad he seems to have got it all sorted and I hope we have yet to see the best of him. Maybe one day he WILL be the best player in the World.

PML what did I start here – those scousers sure don’t like anyone to doubt their heroes

Gerrard is a good player – I still think he is over-rated
He’s no way the best player in the world – I doubt whether he is the best player on Merseyside !!

A great midfielder – should be able to dictate the game and the pace of the game Gerrard isn’t involved enough for that – he is great in short spells – but then disappears

must admit, rather have an inform scholes at his peak then gerrard, we might even see him back for england appently

seems like since ericson has gone a lot of storys about the players not having faith in the manager has emerged, pitty no player at the time had the guts to say anything
