did anone else watch the documentary last night where ross kemp joined the british army on a tour of duty in afghnistan ?
wether you agree or disagree wether we should be there, the programme was a good eye opener at the conditions and the training the young lads, and the seasoned soldiers have to go through.
the first of the programmes dealt with the development of training together to deal with the job at hand, these lads, some only just 18 years old, were on their first tour.they made some serious mistakes, and at one point, they got it so wrong, that if they had been in real war situation they would all have been killed. they used amputees in the training to show the ylads what to expect in the field, it was quite harrowing. some of the amputees had lost limbs while serving in the forces. there was a part of the programme where the wives and mothers spoke of their fears, and of their pride in the men and their commitment to the country, it was a very poigniant part of the programme. young mums with babies watching as their husbands left, not knowing wether they would ever see their families again, it brought it home to me that these men and their families are making a massive sacrifice for their chosen careers. ill be watching the rest of the series and following the tour of duty, i only hope they come home in safety.i have a great deal of pride and respect for these young men, it just goes to show that not all young men are hood rats and burglars.

I know of 3 lads who joined the infantry all around the same age (18 ), within 6months of doing basic training and joining a regiment, they was in afghanistan. It seemed shocking to me that they would send these kids to a place where they could be literally fighting for there their lives. And how much can you prepare someone to fight for their lives in a matter of months? But that’s British Forces for you, to$$ers, i have family in the forces and they all want out cos its ridiculous and they dont have faith in what they are being sent out to do in these places across the world in the name of peace and war on terror.

When you take into consideration not only are they sometimes fighting for their lives, but the effect mentally it will eventually have on them, it sometimes suprises me anyone would want to sign up. But young kids these days are blinded by the promise of a whirl wind life style, travel the world, see many things blah blah have a great life. They forget to mention go and fight for your life in a country with substandard equipment for something thats bullsh!t, see mutilated men women and children and if you ever get married put major mental strains on your loved ones and have postings to places where nothing happens and you forced to live in sh!tty accomodation.

i supose you have a valid point there. ive read stories of men only having 20 bullets each, and having to share body armour. i know of at least one soldier who died because it was his mates turn to wear the body armour it was all over the news last year.i also read that in iraq the american forces calledthe brits the borrowers because they were so badly equipped.
the reason we are there at all is another point. if we are there to rid afghanistan of the drug growing culture, why didnt they just leave the taliban in charge ? when hey were in charge the opium industry was almost wiped out. personally i think that if the taliban do beat, rape and murder in the name of a paedophile they should be left to it.its their country, its their choice to do so in their own country, we have no business there. were not sending soldiers to darfur or to south america are we ? theyre only doing it to other followers of the same caveman religion. eventually they will have killed every female in the country and the problem will have sorted itself.
the morale of the young men is as vital as having the right equipment, and if their morale is destroyed because they believe they are fighting for nothing then they may as well not go there. but while they are there , and they are putting their lives on the line i think they should have our full support in any way we can give it.

    Ive recorded it to watch.

Ive nothing but admiration for our active servicemen, who still carry on signing up to fight for their country in this current climate. Without a thought for whether they agree with it or not.

yep totally agree with you both there. the gangs programmes were ace to watch. i have certainly changed my opinion of mr kemp over the last year or so. i always had him down for being a bit of a hard man cum luvvie, but he seems to have a side to him that id not given him credit for. i certainly wouldnt want to go to some of the places he has. as for the forces, ive family in the services and my son is still thinking of joining up. i have nowt but love and respect for them all.

He is a mans man, but has a natural ability to appeal to all in my opinion.

I loved him in that SAS thing he was in, that was brilliant.

Yes he does. One place he went to in gangs was Kingston in Jamaca. The violence that people live with every day, is just unbelievable. It,s mainly about turf war, who owns what patch, with drugs and weapons of course a big part of it. He wanted to meet the leader, the guy at the top who gives out the orders. He was called the Dom. He was 24 years old!! This was his life. He has his gun almost glued to his hand. He doesn,t know any other way to live. This was the poorer part of Kingston btw. Some of the hovels these people live in are just awful. Utter squalor. He,s also been in the huge arms stores where the police keep all the weapons they,ve seized. It,s like a huge library, FULL of guns of every type you can think of. What a way to live eh?

I saw all those episodes. Even the London one was shocking! See… even with criminals he seems to command this respect that enables them to open up to him. What a guy. Should be more like him about, the streets might be a bit safer with loads of Ross Kemps running them!
