Erring on the side of caution, I would have to disagree with legalising the sale of organs. Currently, here in the NHS it’s a matter of the donor organ going to the most needy recipient and not the most wealthy but I do think there should be more done to persuade people to carry donor cards.

i agree i think kezef , though i think the donor thing should be an opt out decision rather than opt in with cards etc would help alot i think.

Bartering body parts for filthy lucre is a reality it’s true, but the legalisation of same, certainly doesn’t win any endorsement from me. for the reasons cited by Prof Chapman, and more.
Like Kezef, I believe that the emphasis must be placed on donor cards (it’s interesting to note that in countries where paid transplants already take place, the donor rate has seriously dwindled) and perhaps like Poli, I believe that these cards should be used as opt outs rather than opt ins.
In the event of a transplant (in reality, I’m too f****d to have one) my unease at having a deceased donor’s pancreas inside me, would be preferable to knowing that some poor sod was tottering around without one, in order to pay off his debts.

There are no need to go to these extreme measures. In most of Europe organs are harvested as a matter of course, you have to carry a card saying you DON’T want your organs harvested if you die. The consequence of this is that there are many more organs available, from corneas to livers. In this country we have to carry a Donor card and relatives are still asked. In countries like germany, holland and belgium the families have to ask for organs not to be taken. In Europe this isn’t open to abuse, I don’t think people are being killed so that their organs can be harvested! But in other countries I am not sure what would happen.

It is an emotive subject. I don’t agree with selling body parts, I would rather new organs could be cultured from a patient’s own cells, but that is a little futuristic for organs like kidneys. Still who knows what will be possible in the future.

actually i was in Glasgow recently.. and there was a red bus campaign in George square ( slap bang in middle of a massive city) and i stopped to look,as i realised it was a donor thing. signed up for it,it needs no card etc,,your on a national database. My daughter was horrified I signed up,as she listened to the tales of harvesting etc, from China etc.
basically if anything happens and theres a wee bit of me left that MAY benefit someone,,they can have it. BUT as next of kin my kids have final say. I have them told id like to save others,in the event of my….
