Last night I went for a Christmas meal with friends. Big deal I hear you say but ….the meals had to be ordered in advance with the time we wanted the table.

How much more info does a chef need I wonder?

We got served processed turkey frozen roast potato’s & parsnips & veg although fresh was nothing spectacular. We paid £17 a head for 3 courses that they were charging £45 a head for on Christmas day !!

This person loosely called chef went to college to train to produce that cack ? …. to be fair had it not been Christmas it would of gone back but hey ….

Do you think in this modern world we live in we have come to accept crap food in pubs these days?

    Thoughts please.

I would say generally I have found pub food not to be of a good standard ….but then if you’re comparing it to a restaurant its not going to be I guess…the pub business is tough enough as it is nowadays so I suppose they try churn out as much food as possible in the shortest time and often the menus reflect that…..then on the flip side you could argue…if pubs are a struggling industry to stay afloat…maybe they should up their game and serve better food

Again having said that…most pubs seem packed with people wanting to eat there…so does it boil down to ….what one person thinks is cr@p food another will not

Regards your Christmas meal….was it a general opinion the food was substandard? I would have done what you did and not said anything…I wouldn’t have wanted to spoil anyones night out….I prob would have not eaten it properly and put it down to not having an appetite which would have annoyed me because when I go out for an evening meal I pace my day food accordingly!!

My local for years, although don’t frequent it much now I’m alone, I know the management and the chef personally. the food it top quality for a chain (albeit a small chain)

I had my wedding reception there, and  my son  always takes his staff there for a Christmas meal.  it must be good because they come all the way from 25 miles away.

I take friends there too and we’ve never been disappointed. (remember that sharing sundae arc?)

I will always have a word if something isn’t up to standard no matter where i’m eating.

if I’m paying for a product I expect it to be well cooked and nicely presented, edible and tasty.

When ya’ll say pub, you mean like an American lounge, right?
If that is the case, then I would understand it not being up to snuff.

It depends on my mood whether I will send something back politely or just eat it, or just abstain. I don’t think sending food back ruins the night, if you are polite, then I think it can be done.. but if, for some reason, one is feeling off, it’s best not to.. THAT would, it seems, ruin the night.

I also tend to only pick places we’ve vetted to go out w friends or family. I also tend to support only mom and pop shoppes – places owned by families or partners (local places). I find it’s a better quality as they care more. If someone else picks, I try to stomach it anyway, to be kind.. but won’t likely agree to go there again, or will go with something that usually can not be messed up ;) Salads and desserts ;)
Still, sometimes, I get adventurous and try things I have not tried before – in a new place. If I’m hungry, I generally eat it anyway, tip them fine, and just not go back.

I remember when I was in a London pub last Christmas and I had a pheasant risotto. Half way through the bowl I nearly split a tooth on a piece of shot that I assume was still lodged in a piece of the pheasant. Actually found a couple more pieces in there, too.

Waitress didn’t seem too bothered, but then again I think she was only about 16. I wonder if the chef would have been concerned (or if he/she was even told).

I never accept crap food and will always complain if I think I haven’t had my money’s worth.

There are so many good places to eat these days and so much competition. If I was served anything I suspected had been frozen  or processed I certainly wouldn’t go back there and would definitely complain. Loads of ex workmates went out for a Christmas party last weekend in one of those large hotels and not one of them could eat the meal.  Someone commented “Oh well what do you expect when they are cooking for so many”.  Well I would expect for 45 pounds a hot meal that was edible at least !

I’m very into food and know that you can cook great food very cheaply and though not a chef would never serve anyone anything I wouldn’t be happy eating myself. So for someone who has trained to be a chef and serve cack is beyond me!
