    Dear Just Chatties

Ben Parkinson comes from Doncaster and in September last year a Casualty Notification Officer from my Brigade had the task of telling his mother that her son had been very seriously injured in a mine strike in Afghanistan. How he survived the Lord only knows. There has been a degree of press coverage about this case of late and an e-petition to the Prime Minister has been set up by Ben’s mother, Diane Dernie, to make the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme a fairer scheme for injured Service personnel.

You may have read how a prisoner who was prevented from killing himself was paid out £575,000, a teacher was paid £330,000 after an intruder entered the classroom but caused no harm and a Police Officer was paid £175,000 after claiming tinnitus was caused by his radio earpiece.

Ben has so far been compensated just £152,150 for 37 serious injuries including the loss of both legs, brain damage, injuries to his spleen, spine, ribcages and hands, no memory of the past 3 years, unable to take liquids by mouth, 3 months in a coma and being dependant on help for the rest of his life. It is expected that he will be in rehabilitation for at least 12 months. If you’d like to know more of Ben’s plight then please Google his name.

If you’d like to see a fairer deal for Ben and a bit of common sense applied to compensation payments you might like to consider signing the petition; please follow this link for further info.

    Many thanks,

I saw this on the news yesterday, absolutely disgusting.

Also found out today one of the lads killed by friendly fire in Afganistan recently was from my town. Only 19 and on his first tour.

What with a crap government an even crappier allies whats it all about?

    Will sign

Can one of our good members remind me …. how much compensation was recently paid out by the Ministry of Defence to the typist who hurt her thumb and sued them???

    #285362

Oh yes …. here it is …

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=471700&in_page_id=1770

£484,000 …. well it’s only fair isn’t it … I mean she has her whole life ahead of her and she did injure her thumb typing data eh?

Enough to make you mad innit.

Well being dead, or loss of limbs and brain damaged is just a hazard of his job, you dont go to a casino, lose all your money, then sue them.

He knew the risks when he pledged an oath infront of the painting, if you dont wanna put yourself in danger, dont sign up. I have relatives who have served in both iraq wars and in afghanistan, Ireland, Kosovo and so on and as much as i would hope nothing ever happend to them, they knew what they was getting in to when they signed up.

The world is so politically Correct, it’s bullsh!t, why dont every service persons family from every conflict come forward and sue the MOD cos oh they got injured, its ridiculous.

Yes I think you have hit the point here Anita …. spot on in fact.

The armed forces personnell sign on to be put in harm’s way. They may well be trained and taught how to avoid injury, but it will inevitably happen. OK so a soldier gets his legs blown off, his brain damaged and his elbow broken ffs ….. it happens. He KNEW that he could get injured and yet he still went on with it, so tough luck pal ….. you’ve got some money from the taxpayer so shut yer whining, buy a wheelchair and bloody well get over it.

By contrast the RAF civilian clerk did NOT sign up to be put in harm’s way. She was an innocent typist employed to enter data onto a computer. Now, through no fault of her own, she has an RSI induced injury to her thumb and may not be able to type at her normal speed ever again. She DESERVES the compensation ….. which was awarded by the Courts don’t forget.

Good luck to her I say …. and tough luck to the legless soldier. A woman’s thumb is clearly worth far far more that a soldier’s legs.

Well we all know that woman dont deserve that much money, if any! again its a hazard of the job.

I also have RSI, im gonna sue playboy channel

Well, I tend to agree with both train of thoughts. I have also had family members who have served our armed forces and lost several many years before my birth in the greatest conflict which was WW1.
Maybe the issue should be parity with our allies. I can’t quote what the Yanks get and also know that they were poorly treated when they came back from Vietnam but I would be interested to know what their government do in similar cases. Our system appears to be so unjust; I’m happy to sign a petition which shows my disapproval of the present system.
I remember a scene in Private Ryan or Band of Brothers when the padre went round checking that the combatants had filled in their life insurance forms to ensure their $20,000 policy was in order. At the time we didn’t have anything set up for our soldiers is this the case now?

Exactly right Anita. Yes it,s terrible what happened to him, but, as you rightly said, he knew this kind of thing could happen when he signed up. I hurt my back years ago doing geriatric nursing. I knew when I started the job it involved a lot of lifting. I,ve never thought about sueing anyone for it. My brother was in the army. He,s been to the Falklands and Northern Ireland. My dad used to be a copper. He,s been called a pig more times than he can remember. My mum used to do geriatric nursing the same as me. No one has sued anyone because they got called a name or because they hurt themselves. It,s part of the job. Stop bloody whinging and get on with it.
