Where I live the gravy has the consistency of freshly laid tarmac. The curry sauce is kind of like something that’s thrown up and the mushy peas get carved off a block with a chainsaw!
Gross!
You need to move down sarf. We do it proper, like. :D

So pessimistic. I had a fantastic fish supper a couple of days ago (fish and chips to you non-Scots).
The answer is easy. Visit the north east of Scotland where most of the fish in the UK is landed, and get wonderful fresh flakey fish, and great crispy chips made from the right potatoes (maris piper are indeed a good choice as mentioned before).
If the product is good enough you need nothing except a little salt and a splash of vinegar.
I do have curry sauce with chips south of the border where the chips are different. Sadly only a couple of places where I live do really good chips and they all struggle with fish. And none of them do smoked sausage or mealie puddin (or understand that a single fish isn’t unmarried, it’s just a fish without chips).
Call themselves chip shops?
:?

Yup! I do that too – however, having been to Belgium I have to confess I have to have mayonnaise with them, along with the salt and vinegar, and, tomato ketchup ‘cos I can’t make my mind up!
