I’m sure the admirers of Mrs Thatcher and the Purveyors of Good Taste will never forgive the Thatcher funeral thread, but the woman seems to have been totally ignorant of Benny Hill type humour, genuinely mystified when she raised laughter.
A minor naivety was after one by election victory, when she raised the V for Victory sign..but reversed. This sign, well known to all hardened chatters, was unknown to her.
After one Sun editorial making two points in favour of her policy was published, she stood up in front of aides and raised the paper in front of them, one thumb on the p.2 editorial, the other thumb on a p.3 big-breasted Sun ‘bird’. ‘Look at this’, she said, ‘what do you think of these two great points?’
She once told an interviewer that she was on the job all the time.
(all the above from the excellent biography by Charles Moore, which I’m reading)
