I agree that artists should be paid for their work, and there is nothing wrong with a company making a profit. But when these companys have blatantly pulled your pants down for years and took the p!ss out of you, it feels good to see them get a taste of it back. Some people think CD sales are down because of piracy, i would say CD’s are a victim to the changes in how people want there media as was the cassette.

Any music i have downloaded is more of a try before you buy, an artist can bring a song out that barely makes it in the top 40 or maybe even 2 songs, before you know it they are bringing a “greatest hits” album out and every other song on the album is rubbish and does not justify spending the money on it.

Even if you buy singles, again you are still being robbed, as we pay more than the Americans for the exact same downloads.

These record labels going crazy in America and now over here taking people to court claiming downloaders are robbing the artists, what about the amount of law suits against the record labels not paying the royalties to the artists they are due, they never seem to mention that.

These record labels and movie industry screaming about all this money they are losing, it being unfair to the artists, they also forget to mention that year on year profits keep rising.
If a product is that good it will sell itself, but the record labels would rather try and push it down ya throat and force you to pay over the odds for it.

…. and sometimes I end up paying for music twice, on download and cd. Or sometimes three times as I get a fivers worth a month on my phone, so often end up getting what ive already got on itunes again for my phone. Then I may buy the cd, so effectively thats three lots of royalties so if sod em if they have a problem with me…

Well Sharon, with Tesco.com and the like you have the chouice of buying your preferred track as a ‘stand alone’ OR buying the entire album.

I think that this is a lot more fair as with albums, lots of the tracks aren’t that interesting and in reality you only want one or two tracks from it.

Yes record companies have been ”overcharging” for decades now – but this is because of the way that the entire industry has been structured. They do have substantial promotional costs both for marketing a new ‘group’ as well as paying them contract fees etc. Equally, the retailers have traditionally made excellent margins …. all of which contributes to the so-called overcharging.

Now that music is easily available from the internet, the entire industry has to totally re-think the way it goes about producing and marketing its product….. and it IS doing just that.

However, the bottom line is that no record company is going to contract ”new” musicians and spend money on developing them etc if the music is simply going to get ripped off for free. Why should they?
