I have decided that from now on I am not touching a thing!! I tried the Packard Bell restore which is completely reversible (no it’s not!) and have spent the last two and a half hours attempting to restablish an internet connection.

Now that it’s back, it shall be left alone!

I can’t find the post now.
From what I remember you can’t just down load it and install it.
You have to down load it on to an usb memory stick then installed it from that.
Maybe Pb can find the old post and put the answer on here.

Sorry for coming back to this so late on…… been out all day. I remember posting something about this issue ages ago but I can’t be bothered to find it.

    However, …….

You CAN download SP2 for Windows XP from Microsoft update website but I strongly reccomend that you do NOT do this. Every MS Windows XP user I know that has tried it has come unstuck on the installation phase for some reason. It apparently doesn’t always install all the required components every time. This can seriously stuff up your Operating System

Microsoft will supply you with a CD (containing SP2) entirely free and on request….. just call them and ask. Alternatively, PC World were giving them away FOC a while ago and it may well be that you can borrow one from a friend.

Either way the only sure way to ensure 100% successful installation of SP2 is to install it from external media and NOT from a download.

Johnboy, forgive me but I am getting slightly confused here.

If you are getting error messages along the lines that your Operating System in invalid or unsupported this probably means that the Windows Genuine Advantage validation tool either hasn’t ‘validated’ your Operating System, ot that you haven’t run this tool prior to attempting to download and install Microfoft softewar / upgrades.

For example, Internet Explorer 7.0 will only install successfully on correctly ‘validated’ Operating Systems. If the validation process hasn’t been correctly done, the system will revert to the previous Internet Explorer installation – i.e. version 6.0.

Error messages (such as the one you first reported) relating to ”permissions” usually refer to the status of the logged in user. If you are logged in as a ”Guest” for example then you will have a strictly limited range of options. You HAVE to be logged in with FULL Administrator permissions in order to mess around with either the Operating System or with upgrades to Internet Explorer etc.

I am not familiar with the inside of XP Home but my guess is that you are logged in with only limited permissions and not as THE Administrator. To check this do the following:

This works with XP Pro (but might not be available with the Home edition). Go to Control Panel …… then select ”Administrative Tools” …… then select from the list ”Computer Management”……. from the drop down menu select ”Users” and you will see a list of Users that are ‘authorised to logon to your computer.

You can right click any one of them….. seletc ”Properties” from the drop down menu and you will see a tab marked ”Groups”. This will display the group that the particular user is a member of. you will be able to verify the permission level that you have on the computer.

Have a play around with this but whatever you do DON’T ALTER ANYTHING unless you REALLY know what you are doing. (If you do alter something … NEVER shut down again because you may not be able to get back in to re-start the computer).

The advice given on this link is absolutely spot on and thank you DOA.

Thanks for all the advice but I think things are best left as they are. I’m not very tech minded so don’t want to muck around with it and play about with things any more than I already have.

As for the validation issues, I’m as confused as anybody else. The online validation tool gives me an error message, the downloaded validation tool says that I have a genuine copy. Can’t download SP2 from a disk either, so it’s probably best that I just make do.
