While we are into nation-building fantasies, I’ll describe my own one. This is the Federal Republic of the British Isles. This would include all of Britain and Ireland and it would be devolved into regions. The UK monarchy would go, the Anglican church would be disestablished, Ireland would loosen its ties with the Pope and the Isle of Man…[Read more]

Now that the Cold War has been over for more than a decade the Russians are no longer a potential ememy. What’s the problem with a few Russian bombers straying into Nato airspace for Britain, a nation that has airbases leased to the US air force? OK, the US is part of Nato but we don’t need US air bases in UK any more – except perhaps one as a…[Read more]

England does have representation in Ireland. Or at least it did last week because I was there!!!!! I drove right across the Emerald Isle from Rosslare to Connemara and back.
But then I consider my nationality to be British rather than English so then again,
Perhaps……P.S. Ireland has some beautiful scenery but whoever named it the Emerald…[Read more]

Would this independent England include Cornwall? That might not go down well west of the Tamar. Cornwall IS part of the UK, like Scotland and Wales, but has never officially been incorporated into ENGLAND by any act of union!
Furthermore, if Scotland ever leaves the UK, should it take responsibility for Northern Ireland since the majority of…[Read more]

Bassingbourne55 replied to the topic Where will the gun epidemic take us? in the board Getting serious 18 years ago
The USA has a more serious gun crime problem because it has 300+ million people and anyone is allowed to own a gun. People sometimes quote Switzerland as a ‘well-behaved’ gun owning population but a few years ago there was a gun rampage massacre there too.
The more guns there are, the greater the chances of some of them falling into the hands of…[Read more]

Emma – have you sought psychiatric help yet? You seem to be going into meltdown like Yukon Man did! The more mud you sling the funnier it gets, except as a ‘liberalist’ my political correctness tells me I shouldn’t laugh at the afflicted!!!!

Well, I’ve just had a week in Ireland and enjoyed it very much. Friendly people, colourful buildings and beautiful scenery. If I add up my lines of ancestry, I’m about 25% Irish (includes protetants and catholics) but I’d only been to Ireland once before, briefly. I didn’t get to Northern Ireland as intended because of the long extra drive from…[Read more]

I think he already shot himself – in the foot!! He was aiming for his kneecap but he missed!!!
What is not so widely known is that Sinn Feinn / IRA during the 70’s was not only demanding a united Ireland but had ambitions to seize power in Dublin and run Ireland as a Marxist state. This is where the ‘provisionals’ wings of both these…[Read more]

I was born BRITISH, I always think of myself as BRITISH. English, Welsh and Scots people are BRITISH just like Bretons, Provencales and Corsicans are French, Bavarians and Lower Saxonians are German and Texans, Californians and Floridans are US Americans.
Northern Ireland is slightly different as there is a genuine split in allegiance among the…[Read more]

One policeman I met said that one method they used with low-level petty offences was to take the offender for questioning at a police station in a different town on the other side of the police force area and release them there to find their own way home. This sort of deliberate inconvenience would be a good method for dealing with…[Read more]

This thread has been made sadly ironic since a man was murdered by a group of teenagers after he complained about them throwing litter on his partner’s car.

If this had happened in this country, they would have been arrested for neglience at the very least and had their two remaining children taken away from them.
Absolute rubbish – people do that sort of thing all the time without being arrested – no doubt some policemen/women and social workers too have left their children alone at times. With…[Read more]

As a protestant country, why do we allow catholic churches, synagogues, hindu temples or mosques?
As a humanist atheist I have no love for any religions but I don’t object to them having places of worship but there need to be limits. Presumably there are a few ‘flagship’ mosques in some of our cites that equate in importance (to muslims) with…[Read more]

The parents say that what they did was equivalent to leaving a child asleep in the house while they were in a large garden.
In this country I believe it is illegal to leave a child alone in the house but it is not illegal to let a child wander the streets alone (which is probably more risky). How many people let children only a year or two older…[Read more]

It’s not primarily their fault and I’m all for (good looking) women wearing skimpy clothes But there are times and places where dressing like that is unwise. An sexual attack on a woman (or a man for that matter – it does happen) is not the victim’s fault but sometimes they can contribute to the motive.

It’s all very well to blame parents for leaving child alone – but how many parents leave their children for a minute or two – long enough for them to walk outside under a car?
What if the parents had been at home and let a child play outside unsupervised and they were kidnapped? Would that have aroused so much condemnation? It boils down to the…[Read more] -
