“accused” and “arrested” don’t really count – we want to know more about convictions!
9 May, 2008 at 9:23 am #333560Actually, the number is quite small. fewer than I’d have imagined. It’s not good for racial integration but it’s really an accident of demographics. I dare say it would be possible to find a small primary school somewhere that, although being a mixed school, has all girls because there happen to be no boys who go there!
More worrying is the the growing self-imposed separateness of parts of the muslim community. But I see it slightly differently as I see many British muslims as victims, a prisoner population, held captive by a foreign power, islam, that they can’t quite break away from. We don’t know how many reluctant muslims there are in the west, or indeed, in the world, because they are scared to speak out.
If they desert islam they are on their own, because they will be shunned by their own communities and families but still seen as muslims by non-muslims. We all need an identity and for many of these people there is no alternative identy on offer.
It’s similar to Jews who came to Britain during the 1930’s to escape persecution by the Nazis in Germany, only to be treated as ‘enemy’ Germans here when war broke out.
9 May, 2008 at 9:09 am #334138Since all this hoo-ha is about air miles and the environment, has the Chefalissimo given up his gas guzzling high-performance cars? Or is it only food that we need to be all greeny-weeny about?
8 May, 2008 at 7:51 pm #331975Why do people always borrow bags of sugar? Is it some sort of tradition. I’ve never borrowed a bag of sugar and I don’t think anyone’s ever borrowed one from me!!
30 April, 2008 at 4:42 pm #325789Oh well, the way the property market’s heading, people will be hesitating over whether to BUY a house for £150 in a few months time!!!!
26 April, 2008 at 2:59 pm #331792I think I’ve always been Bassingbourne55 except I did use the name White Hat for a few postings some years ago before the big JC wipe-out.
26 April, 2008 at 2:53 pm #331713I think that all divisive forces are harmful to our society. BNP, SNP, Plaid Cymru, Religious fundamentalists of the Christian, Muslim or any other kind, Socialist Workers Party, Animal rights extremists…… the list is endless.
I’m all for diversity, but within a common belief in our basic freedoms and shared interests.
Anyway – welcome to Just Chat!
26 April, 2008 at 2:47 pm #331973Is that why tyre fitters call us ‘sir’ or ‘madam’?
22 April, 2008 at 9:19 pm #330841Why don’t they hold the parade in Glasgow?
20 April, 2008 at 6:01 pm #328579I remember looking at a particular pedal car in a department store before Christmas and receiving a similar one as a Christmas present. I was not quite 3 at the time.
I also remember meeting a 90 year-old woman who showed me a scrapbook of old cards etc. That was 50 years ago when I was about 3, so she would have been born about 1868!
Other memories inclued trolleybuses and those funny little cable car things some stores used to have to send cash to the cashier’s office.
