One policeman I met said that one method they used with low-level petty offences was to take the offender for questioning at a police station in a different town on the other side of the police force area and release them there to find their own way home. This sort of deliberate inconvenience would be a good method for dealing with litterers.
Better still, make them work for 2 or 3 days on a clean-up gang.
15 August, 2007 at 2:29 pm #281162This thread has been made sadly ironic since a man was murdered by a group of teenagers after he complained about them throwing litter on his partner’s car.

10 August, 2007 at 9:39 pm #282123If this had happened in this country, they would have been arrested for neglience at the very least and had their two remaining children taken away from them.
Absolute rubbish – people do that sort of thing all the time without being arrested – no doubt some policemen/women and social workers too have left their children alone at times. With hindsight these people made a terrible mistake – they thought it was safe but it wasn’t.
Go to a few busy supermarket car parks and you are likely to see at least one car left with children in it.I think at the moment they just deserve sympathy and if people can’t sympathise they should shut up. We don’t know the full story – if and when we do, and we discover the circumstances were different from what we were led to believe, then it might be fair to condemn but not until then.
10 August, 2007 at 3:01 pm #278103As a protestant country, why do we allow catholic churches, synagogues, hindu temples or mosques?
As a humanist atheist I have no love for any religions but I don’t object to them having places of worship but there need to be limits. Presumably there are a few ‘flagship’ mosques in some of our cites that equate in importance (to muslims) with cathedrals. But when we talk about globalisation, we can’t ignore the fact the Islam is a bigger ‘brand’ than Macdonald’s, Coca Cola, Wallmart or Toyota and a stronger brand than Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism etc.
10 August, 2007 at 9:30 am #282119When you see them walking down the streets, arm in arm, smileing at the camera’s. Do you see a couple grieving for their daughter, cos I sure as don’t
They don’t exactly look happy and we only see them for the odd few minutes on TV. They look like they have been through a terrible ordeal. We shouldn’t assume there are no tears just because we don’t see any.
10 August, 2007 at 9:00 am #282118The parents say that what they did was equivalent to leaving a child asleep in the house while they were in a large garden.
In this country I believe it is illegal to leave a child alone in the house but it is not illegal to let a child wander the streets alone (which is probably more risky). How many people let children only a year or two older than Madeleine walk to and from school on their own?
An analogy: – You lend your car to a relation. Your car is in good condition. They drive through town in a safe manner within the speed limit. Suddenly a car coming the other way pulls out to overtake recklessly, forcing your friend to slam on the brakes to avoid a collision. The cars do not collide but your car slews across the road and knocks down and kills a pedestrian. In the investigation it was found that one of the front tyres on your car was under inflated. But you had checked the tyres the day before and they were all OK. The police cannot find any witnesses to corroborate your friend’s claim that there was a car overtaking dangerously. Who was to blame for the accident? You? Your friend? The alleged overtaking driver? The tyre company?
Some of the people posting here should be ashamed of the nasty, hateful (and possibly libellous) poisoned pen remarks they have posted. Stop crying your crocodile tears just so you can get off on kicking people when they are down.
10 August, 2007 at 8:51 am #282390It’s not primarily their fault and I’m all for (good looking) women wearing skimpy clothes But there are times and places where dressing like that is unwise. An sexual attack on a woman (or a man for that matter – it does happen) is not the victim’s fault but sometimes they can contribute to the motive.
It’s like football supporters can wear their teams strip wherever they like but it would be unwise to wear Spurs strip in the Milwall area late on a Saturday night!
9 August, 2007 at 4:26 pm #282114It’s all very well to blame parents for leaving child alone – but how many parents leave their children for a minute or two – long enough for them to walk outside under a car?
What if the parents had been at home and let a child play outside unsupervised and they were kidnapped? Would that have aroused so much condemnation? It boils down to the same thing.Parents know that small children (and not so small) can come to harm in a very short space of time if left unsupervised. I’m talking mainly about accidents but the same applies to kidnapping etc. At the local primary school there were 2 cases of a stranger trying to snatch a child from outside the school in broad daylight a few years ago. I think it was even the same description of suspect both times.
If there is any negligence involved in this case, it is overshadowed by the kidnapping and whatever else might have happened – that is the real tragedy and crime.
Presumably everyone who could have been involved in any crime in this case needs to be eliminated by the enquiry but spouting hatred towards the parents at this stage is just cruel and nasty.
I’m not religious, but the saying ‘there but for the grace of God go I’ is a profound one. Smiley might never be in a position of leaving a child alone in a house, but a split second of carelessness or inattention some time, perhaps while driving, might result in someone’s death.
