We don’t have the death penalty at the moment and it doesn’t seem that countries where there is a death penalty (USA, Russia etc.) are free from murders, rapes, etc.

I have said before that although I agree that many brutal and callous killers certainly DESERVE to die and I wouldn’t weep any tears for them if they got bumped off by another prisoner, it’s a big step to bring back judicial killing because there is always the chance of executing an innocent person. Even with DNA evidence, how long before we might hear some expert saying that such evidence is less reliable than hitherto believed?

An exception here, I believe, relates to international war criminals like Saddam Hussein or terrorist leaders like Osama Bin Laden. The evidence against such individuals is so overwhelming and the scale of their crimes so great that they should pay the ultimate price.

I wish there was an afterlife, as long as it was an enjoyable one. However I have to say that we have no evidence that there is an afterlife and, looked at rationally, it seems a highly unlikely concept.

Afterlife is a clever sales patter that religions have peddled as a surprisingly effective incentive to attract converts and control the faithful. If a salesman tried to sell us a computer printer on the basis that it would last for ever and never go wrong we’d laugh our heads off, yet people believe the false promises perpetrated by ‘men of God’.

It also puzzles me why people are so prepared to believe what the men of God say when they are completely the opposite about politicians! At least polititicians talk (and lie) about the real world even if they don’t always appear to live in it! Why is it that if Tony Blair says that London is situated on the River Thames people don’t believe him yet if the Archbishop of Canterbury tells us that Jesus walked on water people DO believe him?

The Victorians in Britain had large families – 6 children was ‘normal’ and families of 10 or 12 were not uncommon. Even allowing for higher levels of infant mortality, this social phenomenon led to a rapid expansion of Britain’s population in the 19th century. Clearly if that trend had continued Britain’s current population would be many times higher. So the idea of population / family size as a social policy is not unrealistic or wrong.

As for USA being to blame for everything: Slavery was a crime against humanity and Britain and America took part in that crime but the slave trade already existed within Africa and in the middle east. Also, any African American alive today owes their existence to the slave trade. We are all chance outcomes of our ancestry and wouldn’t exist if any of our ancestors hadn’t met. Likewise, I possibly owe my existence to my grandfather being invalided out of the army within days of enlisting during the First World War. Had this not happened he might have perished in the trenches and I wouldn’t be here.

    what a silly example.

Of course it’s a ‘silly example’, it 100% contradicts your assertion, so it has to be!

I agree that the 7/7 bombers only really represent muslims in the way that Harold Shipman represented doctors or Fred West represented builders etc… But what would be worrying is if the sentiment of ‘of course, I don’t agree with what they did, BUT…’ was widespread. There are no excuses for an atrocity like 7/7, it was an act of pure evil.

they can’t be that anti-western if they live here

It depends what they say. Abu Hamza got his just desserts for preaching hatred, hopefully other islamist firebrands will be looking over their shoulders and if BNP activists go as far as inciting racial or cultural hatred they should get the same treatment.

There is a fine line between legitimately defending your own cultural values and stirring up hatred of other cultures.

Does anti-hatred legislation cover Northern Ireland too, I wonder? Or perhaps there aren’t enough prisons over to cope!
