Definitely a good thing Zarqawi’s been terminated. I don’t think this will stop the violence but it has eliminated a dangerous and nasty man. Some men can exercise great, almost hypnotic power over others through personality alone – he was probably one such but these men are rare. So finding such a deadly replacement might not be so easy.

Also killing Zarqawi indicates to Al Qaeda that its members can be hunted down and possibly the most significant thing here with regard to the future is that insiders within Al Qaeda might have dobbed him in, as it were. We in the west are coming to terms with having an enemy within (islamist extremists) and now Al Qaeda seems to have an ‘enemy within’ too.

I have visions of a fleet of red skip lorries with Royal Mail emblems on them.

I wonder if an alternative to the polythene bag is a bottle of strong disinfectant – so when the inevitable happens and you notice fido is beginning to walk with his back and front feet getting closer together and a hunched back, you have the disinfectant ready to pour on any offensive waste that might appear!!!

Round here dog poo on the ground has been replaced by polythene bags of dog poo hanging from hedges. I suppose people just sling the bags of poo away since they don’t want to carry it home. In the case of dog poo the best place for it is inside the dog.

I have 3 cats and they use a litter tray so I’m quite au fait with the concept of clearing up after animals but I wouldn’t fancy following a dog around with a polythene bag over my hand in readiness, I think I’d just train it to go in the long grass and to hell with the consequences!

I’m self employed and today I have nothing to do work-wise! So today I’m out of work. Also I’m in the process of some ongoing DIY work – painting the interior of my garage white (long job – breezeblocks and masonry paint!). Is there a trade body to which I should turn for advice about painting safety?

Also, if I was at work I wouldn’t be on the computer right now. I’m only on the computer because I’m waiting in in case I get a work call from the agency. At 10 o’clock I’m off out and any work can wait until tomorrow!!!

The chap with Tourette’s Syndrome, Pete, might set a trend with a new set of mannerisms for young people tired of copying the New York urban black rapper style of finger stabbing and posturing!!!

Surely we’re all on x number of databases anyway, not to mention a master copy every birth, marriage or death certificate being held centrally.

Barring cold nuclear fusion i dont think we have an alternative to nuclear power generation long term

Although I was advocating windpower and other renewables I agree that, realistically, they are unlikely to be able to supply all our power needs all of the time.

Improving energy efficiency might be able to go some way to diminishing the increase in demand for electricity, though better home insulation, low energy lighting, efficient combined-cycle gas central heating boilers etc. can only go so far. Anyway, since many other countries, France in particular, are wedded to nuclear power so we can’t isolate ourselves from the subject even if we closed down all the existing nuclear (or should I say nucular?!!!) power stations.

It is accepted that wind turbines on average are 16/27 efficient = 59%

But is a wind turbine producing 2MW already taking the 59% efficiency figure into account? All power generation systems lose efficiency – nuclear loses energy through heat. Is the 59% efficiency relating to frictional losses etc in the wind turbine or the fact that it only works for 59% of the time owing to variable wind conditions?

Perhaps Sizewell B does produce 1188MW – I got the 850MW figure from the net.

Where would all the turbines go? Mostly offshore, as is planned – the second round of offshore windfarms will be located further out to sea.

And if we stop needing wind turbines they can be taken down and scrapped whereas if nuclear power stations become redundant they will remain in situ for decades, bits of them for centuries even.

Crazy situation. I wonder if lots more prisoners will make failed suicide attempts in the hope of getting big compensation.

If the prisoner was denied psychiatric treatment that they clearly needed, then maybe some compensation would be in order but only perhaps a packet of cigarettes or a couple of old copies of Playboy magazine!!
