Sword doesn’t know what ram does and how it works, what a moron.

Ok sword what do you think ram does on a computer and how does it work?18 January, 2008 at 4:04 pm #287168There is NOT a pc specialist in this country (unless he’s a crook) that will offer you 4gb of RAM with XP and downwards… the software does not accept it, it’ll run you a maximum of 2gb leaving the other 2gb redundant.
And there lays the fault in your argument.
Unless you have a system with redundant or spare ram capacity, you would never be able to run any kind of programs.
The main problem is that some operating systems use too much of the systems resources, leaving other programs un-useable. (Windows Vista)
If well all only ran our computers with just the o/s it would be ok but we don’t.
You need to ask the question, how much of the computer is being used to run the operating system and how much is being used by other things?
I am not a computer salesman, I don’t need to sell this, in the next 12 months most people with have 2GB-4Gb of ram on their computers and most will find there no real differants in their computers.
What they will find is they can use off the shelf programs that work and are easy to use without too many problems.
Or do you think we are all just ramming ram in for the sake of it?
18 January, 2008 at 1:55 pm #303713I was in Leeds back in 1996; it was a nasty little northern place with too many roads and always looked “grey”.
I was like being in a book my Orson Wells, endless faceless people with nowhere to go and nothing to do.
Endless rows of houses that all looked the same, office blocks that made the place look like a Soviet state from the 1930’s.
Its one of those soulless places that people live in out of routine and practically, not choice.
18 January, 2008 at 11:46 am #287165Ok let me think back on this.
When we all start using Windows 3.1, they told us all that we need 2 MB of ram and a 286 processor.
But only work well on 386 processor with 4 MB of ram.
Windows 95 needed 16 MB and 486 processor.
But only work when you use 32 MB ram.
Windows 98 needed Pentium and 64 MB ram.
Only work well on the higher Pentium with 128 MB
I think it was Window Millennium after that, but I didn’t buy it.
Windows XP was next, that need a Pentium 2 and 128 MB, but it worked better on Pentium 3 with 256 MB ram.
That take you back about 15 years.
About 5-6 ago they started making motherboards with flash bois that could be up graded.
I am sure that most motherboards that where build after 2002 can have there bois up graded to deal with any amount of ram.
So when you say that the OS systems can’t take higher rates of ram or handle it, you’re wrong.
Like most programs they will just hit the max operating level.
I still have a celeron 1.6-laptop 1gb ram with Windows 95 and MS office 6 on it, still works and it still the faster computer I have.
18 January, 2008 at 11:21 am #304122Well when I check up on smiley, my solicitor described him has a “man of straw” or for you morons, an out of work bum with no money, no job and living in rented accommodation.
So he’s not worth suing.
But if anyone would like PB’s or martins home address let me know.
The declaimer on the first page is a joke and will not save the site owners from being sued.
I did have a really good look at it with legal about 2 years ago, to see if we could use something similar on our contracts, he laugh so much, he is now using it has a debating tool for his first year students at the University of Sussex.
I am sure if first year law students can find holes in it, a good barrister will rip it a part.
There are a lot of people out there who would like to see an end to chat sites in the UK, I am sure netty could find support for such legal action.

It’s not an excuse at all, its common sense.MS Office was never design for home users, it a work tool for business.
MS Office was always designed for servers not average home pc.
The main problem is that when you buy a new product like MS Office, you read the requirements and it should work on your home computer, but it doesn’t or runs so slow its un-useable like in this case.
Then it’s a matter of fixing the problem after you have spend £400 buying the software pack without buying a new pc.
A ram up grade is normally the easy way to solve the problem.
Has for the dual core chips, maybe you can write computer programs for computers that don’t exist yet but most people can’t.
Computer programs do take about 1-3 years to develop, then another 6 months to go market, there not instant.
But its nice to know there are people who still believe computers are magical things like you.
17 January, 2008 at 11:24 pm #286703You know i did have a look for that at the time.
But that laptop has been “droped” and replaced.
Laptops are disposable, if they go wrong and there out of guarantee, just replace them.
17 January, 2008 at 11:19 pm #287161Without getting too technical on motherboard design, basically this was a computer that was build about 3-4 years ago, with a an old chip set.
Not a new one.
With the old Pentium 3/4’s you could just up grade the ram to cover any running issues. This version of Office was written for the older computers like the P 3, it is an office program and most offices only change their computers once every 5-10 years.
There a simple reason your not happy with your new dual core computers, the programs that take full advantage of the this kind of chip set are not in the marker place yet.
It will take about a year for the new programs to come out and the web to catch up.
Most of us are putting off buying new computers for the next 6-12 months, the new dual core chip sets are rubbish, the only good one is the AMD chip set.
The quad cores chip sets are the ones we are all waiting for, they are better.
But the price is still too high and most of us are waiting for them to improve and drop in price.
We have seen this before when they launch the Pentium MMX+ chip set back in 1996, and 6 months later they then launch he Pentium 2 chip set.
When you’re buying a home computer always buy what you need now, not what you think you will need later.
17 January, 2008 at 2:46 pm #304595Ok there is a simple reason for you still seeing chess on line has mobile.
When you sign into msn it always updates with the latest information about the people on messsager
The virus is telling people that this person is “mobile”, its playing with the msn setting, has most virus do. . It will still behave like msn, when someone logs in they will pop up on msn like normal.
So if you see anyone on msn who is showing has “mobile”, there a good chance they have a computer virus.
Wait till there off line, and then send them message telling them to run ant virus or tell them in a chat room.
Chess is being helped and but unless you have this computer virus and have removed it, its hard to give advice.
This one has been around for about 5 years and most ant virus programs can find the old version, but the new version is bigger and nastier to deal with.
This virus is call “variant “, there have been msn virus before, and in this case someone has taken an old one, play with it and made it hard for most ant virus programs to find.
I would say to most people, if you have an up to date ant virus program and a good firewall, you should be ok.
But the only real defence ageist any computer virus is common senses.
