The Ice Queen is a much more interesting character than Cameron.
Philip Hammond, now Chancellor of the Exchequer, known in Westminster as ‘Spreadsheet Phil’ because of his boring accountant’s apporoach, has said that it will take 4 years at least to get out of the EU.
Boris of the FO – what an ideal job for the man. I wonder how many…[Read more]

We live in a liberal democracy, not a plebiscitory democracy; in my opinion the campaign was a travesty of demoracy., and nobody gave a precise date when to leave.
But now we have to see what happens. It would be the height of madness to leave immediately, with no trade policy , much less a strategy. The British Civil Service have not negotated…[Read more]

There is the old tale of the convict who appealed to the king for a reprieve by claiming that he could teach the royal horse to sing.
Intrigued, the King granted the convict his wish, but insisted that if the horse could not sing within one year, the convict would die.
The convict’s friend asked whether the king’s horse could be taught to…[Read more]

Not as much as the war was a waste of money….and a waste of much else, more important than money.
It could have been done more quickly, less expensively, but in the end it was important that this report was completed.
The relatives of the soldiers will now be able to take legal action, hopefully.

The Chilcott Report is (surprisingly) damning of Tony Blair’s decision to rush us all to a war in Iraq which has proved to be devastating for iraq, and for the region, and to have led to an upsurge in terrorism. The only people to have emerged with any credit were the British squaddies who had to carry through a horrifying war with insufficient…[Read more]

the hopes of the young as they set out on life’s adventure
this was the start of what may be the angriest of operas, written immediately after the authors fled from Berlin due to the victory of the Nazis.

The title is, of course, from the movie, The Italian Job. It was uttered by sarah Vine, of the Daily mail, to her husband, michael Gove, on leanring that the leave campaign had actually won, rahter than put enormous pressure on Cameron.
What followed was the first stage of what may well be called negotiating an Exit to brexit, though whether it…[Read more]

Princess Di was a big weepfest.
The political games are tedious. Even Labour threatening to destroy itself is in the seediest way imaginable.
The country does give the impression at the moment of having a bit of a nervous breakdown, though. When we need a lot of things worked out, things which are crucial to our wellbeing, we have to watch…[Read more]
