in chat, the guides were complaining that they w ere unable to do anything because the a-holes throwing private addresses around were using some sort of device which hgave them different IP addresses

Animal cruelty has always been widespread.

I don’t have any animals as pets, don’t particularly want any,

I also note that many animal rights people tend not to have any particular concern about people being treated cruelly.

but if you treat animals cruelly, then you tend to have the same attitude to people.
