Also, I think there is an important distinction between “a doll being likened to black people negatively” and “black people being likened to a doll negatively”.
That being said, do you actually have any evidence that golly was created to be a stereotype of black people? Because I haven’t been able to find any connection other than the skin colour.
If that is the only reason, then how is that different than saying The Hamburglar is a racist stereotype of white people?

17 December, 2016 at 3:26 pm #1011853I don’t know the answer to that…I have no experience of it…..we are discussing racial abuse triggered from a black rag doll…with an unacceptable part name…and a doll which was likened to black people negatively
I was thinking more abstractly when I asked that question, abuse based on a characteristic you don’t consciously choose seems to be pretty much the same to me. The effect of the abuse is the same regardless if its because of race, sexuality or something else.
Also, I think there is an important distinction between “a doll being likened to black people negatively” and “black people being likened to a doll negatively”.
as for you laughing off the comments because the abusers thought you were Mexican….if you were Mexican would you have taken offence?…I don’t understand why its funny…abuse is abuse….
I was laughing at the person who made the insult, he had clearly never seen someone from southern Europe before, and didn’t understand that a person speaking in an English accent probably didn’t live in America.
I don’t laugh it off when I get called a Paki…and im indian……I don’t think Pakistani people deserve abuse therefore I don’t find it funny
I have never understood why shortening ‘Pakistani’ to ‘Paki’ is viewed as racist, but when the same thing is done with ‘British’ to ‘Brit’ it is not racist. This goes back to my point about the intention of what is said, rather than a specific word that is used.
There are many valid criticisms of the country of Pakistan, and that is in part fault of the people who live there. If it is reasonable to assume a person’s values based on nationality is a difficult question.
I think it wrong to do so based only on their race, which I think is what you are describing.

16 December, 2016 at 11:21 pm #1011821So the EU parliament has been blocked for taking part in negotiations.
Remind me again why you want to stay with these people?
Being that the parliament is the only democratic part of the EU, European citizens can no longer have any input in the way they want the negotiations to go.
(I linked to RT because of the claims of ‘Russian propaganda’ going around in the US at the moment, if you didn’t get my joke.)
16 December, 2016 at 12:52 pm #1011793even if they are not in the slightest bit racist…will never understand that feeling of being made to feel like a piece of dirt on their shoe just because of their colour
A quick follow up point, do you think that racist abuse is comparable to homophobic abuse? I definitely understand what that is like.
I have actually recieved ‘racist’ comments before, but I just laughed at them. Mostly because they were made under the assumption that I was Mexican, which i’m not.
16 December, 2016 at 12:41 pm #1011792Hey, and welcome to Just Chat!
16 December, 2016 at 12:33 pm #1011791No form of racism is worse than any other and to call it out as such is quite insulting to anyone who has suffered it
Really, so being called a gollywog is as bad as being a holocaust survivor?
That doesn’t seem right to me.
Sophia….some just wont get it….you can explain and give all the examples in the world…
She has explained nothing, and given no documented examples.

You are also ignoring that she said specifcally that white people (as in all of them) are unable to understand it, which impies either that racism against white people doesn’t exist, or that white people are just too stupid to understand, or both.
Good job we all don’t think offence is taken rather than given……….that would give a green light to say what you want to anyone…leaving the insult on them whether they are offended or not

I don’t actually think it should be taken, I was just describing the behaviour that some people go out of their way to find offence where clearly none was intended. See my previous post on language policing:
I should clarify my previous post with the fact that I don’t think that any individual word can be offensive, it is the intention with which the word is used that causes the offence. I don’t really understand the attempts some people make a language policing, there is no evidence that a word itself can cause harm. And banning a word does not prevent the intended meaning from being expressed using other words.
15 December, 2016 at 9:44 pm #1011760. Certainly didnt intend to start WW3 and offend anyone.
Offence is taken, not given, apparently.
It’s pretty obvious you didn’t intend to offend anyone Tinsel, so don’t worry about it.
15 December, 2016 at 9:26 pm #1011756“Do as I say, not as I do”.
I think it’s more “Listen to my rhetoric, and if you question it then you are clearly <something>-ist”.
Socrates is turning in his grave.
These harmless toys for white children
Wait … if they are harmless, how are they offensive?

15 December, 2016 at 9:23 pm #1011753You’re avoiding all of my questions still, lol.

15 December, 2016 at 9:14 pm #1011749Drac, you type some utter rubbish!
Asking you to explain something is rubbish?
some people are born stupid. Racists breed racists er? and it goes on and on and on.
Racism is genetically heritable, thats quite a claim. Do you have any evidence to support that?
