My god how times change on JC and I wonder who the real movers and shakers are in this place now.

I don’t do politically correct – i’m probably a bit too long in the tooth for that – but I do listen to members views and act on them.

As for the ”real mover & shakers” ……. well maybe you can be one of them eh?

Is that really such a good idea though? As has been shown, that’s just as likely to lead to confrontation as anything else and we’ll be right back to square one.

Fair point John. It is a fine line between confrontational posting and outright abusive posting ….. but it is a line that we are drawing here and now.

If posts get ‘out of hand’ (which has happened all too frequently recently) then they will be deleted. There is no intention to become over prescriptive or to apply some form of strict censorship over member’s views or opinions, but there is a very firm intention to stop all this nasty, aggressive, vindictive posting that the boards have suffered from of late.

Thanks for that explanation Wildwolf – hopefully it will serve to put their minds at rest for those who use this type of internet connection.

I guess that the overall message coming out of this is that your wireless internet connection IS secure BUT only if you take care to use a secure password to protect access to it. Also it underlines the absolute necesstiy for a strong, effective, and up to date firewall.

In response to Fastcars’ several well made points:

The general feeling expresed over the last several months is that the message boards had become (perhaps by default) far too confrontational. This is as much the fault of Moderation in allowing it to get this way, as is it the fault of those who were indulging themselves in their personal wars.

So every pendulum swings, and the JustChat one is now swinging back towards a more central position where hopefully the boards can be a place where ALL members can post their stuff without the ‘fear’ of being personally attacked; where a thread can be started on a particular topic without being ‘hijacked’ by others for the pursuit of their personal grievances or vendettas.

There is absolutely NO intention to stop the general fun; the bantering; the mickey taking; the oddball or quirky posts; the cynical or sarcastic humour; the general chit-chat of people’s day to day lives and concerns and so on. BUT the overall emphasis HAS to be on humour; on being basically good natured; on adding to something rather that subtracting from it; on being on balance nice or pleasant rather than vindictive or just plain nasty for the sake of it.

To those who will undoubtedly whinge that the boards will become somewhat anodyne or boring and the threads will be all ‘lovey-dovey’ and ‘mhahh’ riddled I will say just this:

    DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT YOURSELF.

In reality, all JustChat is actually providing is some free server space and software to go with it. The day to day content is entirely and totally created by the members who post stuff. If you don’t like the assortment of threads that members post because (you think) they are too boring, then YOU post some threads that you think are or will be interesting.

There is plenty of room for debate; controversy; the mundane; the quirky; good humour; whatever topic (within reason or the boundaries of good taste) that you can think of. We have an enormously wide range of opinions amongst our members, all of whom have their own uniques style and all of whom are (or can be if allowed to be) both interesting and entertaining.

The fact is that criticising others is relatively easy, doing something positive about it is somewhat more difficult.

So no I haven’t ”gone soft” or lost my sense of humour, but yes I have totally lost patience with the negative and destructive. So how about coming with me on this and help to make your JustChat membership something to be enjoyed, both for yourself and for others?

I haven’t had a sense of humour bypass operation – at least not yet anyway.

I suspect that the ”selling papers” argument is the more likely one. This story got the level of publicity it did because the alleged (and proven innocent) rapist was a publicly known person. If it had been some bloke from Wherever-on-Tyne that nobody had ever heard of, the national Media probably wouldn’t have even bothered to report it.

As it is, his name has been splashed all over the national Media, he’s lost his job as an actor (and maybe even his career) as a result, and for the rest of his life he will carry the stigma of this matter with him.

She, on the other hand, remains totally anonymous and can carry on with her life secure in the knowledge that she can never be named.

And if what if she really was raped? You would have an innocent person thrown in jail? Rape is really hard to prove, so how can you make the conclusion of the footballer being innocent and the girl being guilty?

Yes that is a point. But eventually you have to draw the line somewhere and generally this is done when a jury finds a defendant guilty or not guilty.

If you took the view that even though a person was found not guilty in a court, they must have done it anyway and it just couldn’t be proved, then this totally undermines the entire justice system and trial by jury.

According to the press report, the (anonymous) girl claimed she had been raped. the named male denied it totally. Ergo one of them must have been telling lies. He was found not guilty – so the only conclusion from this is that she must have lied.

ah ha! So..the question is, whos been squealing to PB in pm? Bloody spoil sports. Its only a bit of harmless banter. Take that away and the place becomes a morgue.

…the thing is, something doesnt add up…how come sword is being so nice lately as well?? :-k

It’s not just PM’s that have been sent. You only have to read the boards over time to pick up on the many coments made by users in general, when a thread is ”ruined” by a fight that is carried on by others and which is invariably totally off topic.

People are just getting fed up with it Pebbles and this is a direct response to the wishes of what I suspect are the majority of members. Harmless banter is fine just as long as it remains harmless. When it gets spiteful or vindictive then it will be stopped … just like that.

The problem is that when one party to a rape claim is given anonymity and not the other, there will ALWAYS be incidents like this one where an innocent person is stigmatised for life as a result of an (unproved or totally false) accusation.

Equally, if females are named in court, ESPECIALLY when they are proved to be the victim of a rape, then I suspect that loads will refuse to go through the whole process for fear of being stigmatised themselves. This would be completely undesirable as many more real rapists would escape unpunished.

Perhaps the answer is that BOTH parties to a sexual offence are granted anonymity until a finding of guilt whereupon the rapist can be named (and shamed) publicly.
