You say it occurs “Nightly” – maybe not so.
I spent all yesterday evening from around 9.00pm to 1.00am in the chatrooms – particularly Forum 3 – and there was no trouble at all. A couple of very minor handbag swings (one in F1 and one in F3)but that was all. Neither warranted a booting.
There were also two other Staff members around the site at the same time.
It’s easy to sit on the sidelines and moan, but the reality isn’t always as bad as is often made out.
6 July, 2009 at 12:59 pm #400269and there I agree with you bon bon … it is harder than it looks. I’ve been doing this stuff for not far off 10 years now and if I had £1 for every time somebody told me how to do it better ………….!!!
I always find it saddens me when a normally reasonable chatter rises to the bait offered by some stupid little kiddie and mouths off with an amazingly foul tirade of abuse …. and then gets themselves booted for it.
And what do we all hear from the “innocent” chatter then???
“I neva done nuffink” or “I woz booted for no reason” or more recently “I was only defending myself & my children etc etc”.
6 July, 2009 at 9:15 am #400266You very accurately describe the difficulty that ChatGuides have when ‘banning’ a persistent scroller or abusive user bon bon. As you say, they simply keep on coming back over and over, sometimes for hours on end. Each time they are booted it confirms to them that they are being noticed etc etc and which simply reinforces their stupid & childish behaviour.
On a point of accuracy, when you put a user on ‘ignore’ you cannot then see their typing and more importantly they have no way of knowing that you have done this – other than your lack of reaction of course.
There is therefore no reason for them to leave and return if the ignore facility is used.
It may “get your goat” to be told to use the ‘iggy button’ but the fact is that most users simply don’t do this and prefer to get into some sort of slanging match with the abuser – thus making them worse.
6 July, 2009 at 9:07 am #400473This is yet another example of a bored Media with nothing better to do and a bored readership only too willing to throw its collective hands in the air in ersatz shock and outrage.
In current his role as ambassador to the UN, Sir John Sawyers is well known to many thousands of people. as no doubt is his wife and daughter. (One only has to think of the hundreds if not thousands of diplomatic receptions they have to attend to realise this.)
But O….M….G here is a picture of him in swimming trunks and on a real beach ffs!!! What’s even worse they are dark blue trunks with a light blue stripe on them.
Yes – this is clearly a major security breach and somebody ought to do something about it !!!!
5 July, 2009 at 4:37 pm #400022I hear that the tickets on sale for MJ’s funeral are limited to 175,000 …… and to date over 1,500,000 people have applied for one.
If it is all a hoax to boost his earnings from record sales – and he comes back from the dead – do you suppose that they will get their money back???
BTW: Remember – you read it here first folks !!!!!
5 July, 2009 at 4:34 pm #400257Let me add to the comments made already.
We don’t claim (and never have claimed) that the chatrooms are moderated permanently or 24/7. To do this we would need around 130 ChatGuides – assuming that each Guide did two shifts of two hours per week for 52 weeks of the year (remember we have three chat forums running).
We currently provide around 85 hours of cover a week spread across three Forums – generally in the evenings when the rooms are busy.
That said, we do not guarantee that our chatrooms will always be abuse free. I wish they were, but there are always the silly little attention seeking kiddies that try their damndest to spoil other people’s enjoyment of our site.
Frankly, the worst thing you can do with one of these keyboard gangsters is to respond to their provocation. It only encourages them to continue having a go at you. When there isn’t a ChatGuide around and you are on the wrong end of such puerile behaviour … please use the ignore facility – that’s what it is there for.

5 July, 2009 at 8:42 am #400228OK who fancies a little wager???
I’ll wager that he provides the Police with a ‘location’ for the body ….. a massive search ensues (with the Media in full attendance naturally) …. and surprise surprise, nothing is found yet again.
Meanwhile Brady thoroughly enjoys himself in the knowledge that the family will go though extreme distress once more and he will dominate the Media headlines. The more he can drag this stuff out, so the more sick pleasure he gets from the process as he ‘re-lives’ his ghastly deeds.
4 July, 2009 at 11:22 am #400020Karl Malden was a nice guy, both on and off stage and earned a lot of respect from his fellow professionals.
It was said that both he and Jack Palance were the two ugliest guys in the film business.
