I remember, from a similar “rape” issue that occurred in Pakistan a while ago and which was discussed at length on these boards, that for a female to claim “rape” (under THEIR law) she had to provide FOUR witnesses to the event.

Given that, in some cases, a woman’s unsupported word under OUR laws to gain a conviction for rape, this might seem somewhat unfair when judged by OUR standards.

However, we have to take into account that in Saudi, women are most definitely regarded as second class citizens with extremely limited ‘rights’. OK you may think that this is unfair but nevertheless that is the law in Saudi whatever we might feel about it.

The woman clearly broke their laws and quite rightly she will receive 100 lashes. After all, given her condition, she can hardly deny that she committed “adultery” – acording to Saudi law. She’s lucky that they didn’t sentence her to be publicly stoned to death.

Leaving aside the more hysterical comments in the “Daily Fascist” …. the last line was most interesting:

“They (Saudi women that is) are also banned from going out in public in the company of men other than male relatives.”

So this 23 year old “single woman” who lives in a secular society where these rules apply, knowingly accepts a lift from a bloke in a car (who was a complete stranger to her …. not a relative) and at night as well and the “Daily Fascist” wonders why she was punished.

Pretty obvious I’d have thought – she broke the law …. that’s why !!!

This is a typically tight-arsed Jock excuse for a New Year’s resolution. They’d do anything to avoid paying taxes – particularly taxes that go to the English!!!

No … you keep on smoking 80 a day and paying all that lovely tax to us lot down south.

…. oh and if you need to use a public lavatory on your travels, they are all helpfully signposted on our Motorways.

Just follow any sign that says “Birmingham”, “Manchester” or “Newcastle”.

Most (if not all) councils have plenty of snow plough attachments for their gritting trucks, but the light scattering of snow we’ve had recently doesn’t warrant a snow plough.
I wonder what happens when a snow plough clouts a speed bump?

Which neatly encapsulates the gross collective stupidity of the Media. They whinge endlessley about LA’s not using snowploughs to clear suburban roads … whilst completely ‘forgetting’ that speed bumps render this operation impossible.

That said, my local council (Richmond) doesn’t have any snow plough attachments at all, whether for a gritting truck or indeed any other type of truck.

This is because we haven’t had more that a slight dusting of snow here for many many years – so there simply isn’t a need. They don’t have a 24/7 catastrophe centre manned either, just in case an asteroid hits Richmond Park. or a Tsunami sweeps up the Thames one day and obliterates the local theatre.

As a footnote: If it wasn’t for these “national disasters” occuring every so often, the good ladies of the WRVS (and numerous other ‘caring’ organisations) wouldn’t have anybody to force their hot tea and ersatz sympathy onto would they?

They’d have to retreat to their ‘nice’ little homes and knit some more woollen socks for the poor & needy. Now THAT would be a real disaster wouldn’t it?

So now that the record snowfall (in the South East at any rate) has abated and life returns to some semblance of normality – were the Media being unfair to the powers that be or merely hyping up a minor drama into a major crisis as usual???

OK so there wern’t any snowploughs. No surprise there though. At a cost of something like £100,000 each and with a possible use of maybe once or twice every 20 years or so – does it REALLY make sense to buy a fleet of ’em and have them sitting rotting and rusting away just in case they might be needed one day.

On this basis we’d invest millions now – and maybe use them around the year 2029….. assuming they’s start up when they were needed and assuming that anybody could remember how to use them.

How about the big “gritting disaster”? The Media conveniently forgets that local councils have been gritting (i.e. salting) the roads all through December and January as we ‘suffered’ “one of the coldest winters on record” – according to the Media anyway.

They draw parallells between us and say Norway or Switzerland in terms of keeping roads open – neatly forgetting that road salt is totally ineffective against deep snow and that they use a glycol based spray and snowploughs on their roads to keep them passable.

Oh and deary me I nearly forgot. motorists in Scandinavian countries (and Switzerland) routinely fit either snow chains or snow tyres to their vehicles all through the winter as THEY know that trying to drive in heavy snow and ice with ‘normal’ tyres is a sure fire way to end up in a ditch.

We British on the other hand, reserve the right to drive around at speed on semi-impassable roads and blame the government, the local council, or indeed anybody but ourselves when it all ends in tears.
