I’m not too sure about the reference to the Reindeer getting their oats, Rose – but other than that it is really nice.

I think you have a really good point there Bas and one that has escaped most people for years.

Being typically rebellious in the teenage years and over-indulging in sex, drinking and so on is OK if it’s nice middle class children / teeenagers doing it simply to irritate their parents.

But when the working classes get in on the act, they spoil it for everone with their excessive use of public violence, drug-taking and generally upsetting and frightening the horses. It simply won’t do at all.

The working classes should stick to coarse fishing and allow their betters to go fly fishing.

……..But children need to learn early that there’s no mythical Santa who flies around in a sleigh pulled by reindeer and squeezes down chimneys to leave presents. Then a few years later they will be prepared for the realisation that there’s no God either.

….and THAT is where you’re quite wrong Bas. I will concede that there is no God and that millions of Christian believers have got it wrong – fair enough – but there most definitely IS a Father Christmas and whatsmore he most definitely flies around in a sleigh pulled by Reindeer. Eight of them to be precise.

Look, this must be so as the Reindeer even have names ffs. If it wasn’t true (as you incorrectly suggest) then the Reindeer wouldn’t have names would they???

    Quite right Cherry.

My little girl KNOWS that Santa is real. Why??? Because last Christmas she woke up “in the middle of the night” and she told me that she heard the bells on his sleigh tinkling as he passed by outside the house.

Sure enough, the next morning (Christmas Day) there before her eyes were the presents that Santa had left the night before.

Not only that, but he also had time to take a large bite out of the mince pie she left for him on Christmas Eve AND finishe off his glass of sherry. (Harvey’s Bristol Cream in case you were wondering).

So Miss Miseryguts teacher ….. THERE is your proof that Father Christmas really exists and really does make children’s dreams come true.

Isn’t it strange that in this case noone is blaming the police that failed to notice something was seriously wrong with her mother or boyfriend – aren’t they trained to know when someone is lying ??

LL the very sad fact is that in most cases of this sort, the victim and the offender are known to each other. Sometimes it is “family” and sometimes it is a “close friend” or neighbour.

Police are very much aware of this and as they develop their list of suspects, they invariably include those that are or were known to the victim.

I’ve posted this comment before (on threads about the infamous Maggie McCann so-called kidnapping) but I have a theory that has so far stood the test of time.

In practically every case where Police suspect (but cannot at that stage prove) the involvement of a family member etc, they always get the person to make a well publicised Media appearance pleading for the safe return of ……. or begging for the murderer to hand themselves in etc etc.

My theory is that by doing this, Police very successfully publicly demonstrate the utter lies and callous deceit of the accused, so that when all is revealed (in Court) the person is denied any chance of defending themselves with further lies to the effect that they “didn’t mean it” or whatever.

If you think back over many many cases of murder or kidnapping etc, in almost every case that a tearstained public Media statement is made, that person is subsequently arrested and charged with the crime.

The Police almost certainly “knew” that Sharon’s mother was involved – along with members of her extended family – but lacked the evidence needed to arrest and charge her.

You raise some very interesting and thought provoking points Sarah.

However, the other side of the coin (which most of us fortunately never see) is the high number of malicious complaints of child abuse made to social services, as a means of one person getting their revenge on another person.

I recently was asked to offer some advice (as best I could) to a member of the JustChat community (“Mrs X”). She had received a visit from her local social services who informed her that they had received a complaint that her children were being sexually abused both by her and by her new partner – who had recently moved into Mrs X’s home.

She was absolutely distraught and was terrified that her children would be taken into care. There seemed to be nothing she could do or say to persuade the social services that she was telling them the truth and that her children were NOT being sexually abused.

The complaint, Mrs X told me, was totally without foundation; was absolutely malicious; and had been made by the ex-girlfriend of her new partner. The motivation was to get back at Mrs X for supposedly “stealing” the complainant’s boyfriend.

Fortunately, Mrs X took my advice and immediately contacted a solicitor who specialised in child protection issues. As a result the complaint was investigated at a ”senior level” and was eventually dismissed. Mrs X was allowed to keep her children and all was well.

I don’t know what, if any, comparisons can be drawn from this and the Baby P case. I mention it here simply to demonstrate that it is not as easy as one might think to deal with these issues. The children MIGHT have been being abused, or they might not. Mrs X MIGHT have been a most convincing liar or she might not.

Whichever way they go, it is a really tough call for the social services to make. Do nothing and get it wrong and the children suffer. Forcibly remove the children (on a malicious complaint) and get it wrong and again the children suffer.

I guess that at the end of it all it is a judgement call – one that I am very glad I don’t have to make.

Complete rubbish ….. Father Christmas IS real, everybody knows this to be true.

You want proof???? OK, you shall have proof.

My little daughter left a letter to said Father Christmas on the doorstep with her list of ‘ideal requests’ last Saturday evening. By Sunday morning it had gone. Clearly it had been collected overnight by Santa’s little helpers and is even now, winging its way to the North Pole.

I share her confidence that Father Christmas WILL deliver some if not all of her requests on Christmas day.

Proof, is ever proof was needed!

Well we blame the “system” and we blame “social workers” but I wonder, I really wonder if we are right in doing this?

I still have this iawful mage of Karen Matthews (mother of Shannon) being supported by her “friends” – all up in arms at the terrible thing apparently having been done to her ‘missing’ daughter.

I find it really hard to accept that nobody had the slightest inkling that Karen Matthews was a ‘wrong ‘un’.

In the same way, I find it really hard to accept that Baby P’s mother somehow managed to fool ALL of her friends – including her childminder, who saw Baby P practically every day, and apparently noticed nothing at all.

Yes it’s the easy option to blame the social services and those that were in charge, but maybe we ought to look at ourselves a little bit harder eh?
