Get one of those cages/homes Catty was on about and re-home the hedgehog your self or ask can she take it off your hands.
I used to be terrified about gas too, always afraid it will blow but its everywhere now and with Health and Saftey standards of today your grand Rubes, its safe. Just get it serviced with it says so, once a year I think.
