Kids who go hurtling down the pavement on their skateboards, doing jumps off the kerb then look back in a “bet you wish you could do that” kind of way.
A friend whose husband had been a keen skateboarder in his youth was telling me how the other day a teenage lad had been showing off to his mates in the park but wasn’t really very good. He almost went straight into them and her hubbie said “for gods sake give that here. This is how you do it” and proceeded to show them a few tricks. He walked off with them looking in admiration and saying “I wish my dad was cool like that”…but as she said, they didn’t see him hobbling around in agony for the next 2 or 3 days! :lol:
Yes, sugar and water then the hairdryer – it dried stiff and held the spikes in place. A pain in the summer though, wasps homed in on it and if you got too hot it melted. Soap was reasonably effective but if it rained you’d get soap in your eyes. You could nab your mum’s hairspray but it took cans and cans of the stuff and just wasn’t cool.
The whole idea in the punk era was to achieve the look without spending loads of money, no designer labels with ready made rips and designer safety pins. :roll:

This bears out what people say in the old thread – people aren’t really interested in chatting to strangers the’ll never meet now that the initial few years of novelty have worn off.
Most of the active posters on JC now are from forum 3, they post in that section and rarely roam elsewhere on the boards.
I think people are still interested in chatting to strangers they’ll never meet, they just don’t use message boards to do it so much these days. People seem to prefer MSN or Facebook or similar. That’s how it seems to me anyway.

Really? The forums for the interest groups that I belong to seem to be going from strength to strength…perhaps it’s not the forums that are dying but the interest in the area of interest…so to speak. :?

The internet is increasingly becoming a tool for practical use and high quality entertainment (I mean quality in terms of performance, not content!) and the poor old general chat room and message board will soon become a thing of the past.
Some people do seem to treat the internet as an outlet for their frustrations in real life but on the whole they are a vocal minority. In a forum with a strong sense of community the regulars don’t respond and freeze them out…or have a little sport with them until they get bored and then freeze them out. As for the chat room and message board becoming a thing of the past…I think I’ve been hearing that ever since I started using them. They are evolving but I think they will continue in one form or another for some time yet.
Ahem….who’s the leading man? That might get more people auditioning for the role of cornetto seller…
Having asked the question I thought I’d better answer it too! :lol:
I left school knowing exactly what I wanted to do but quickly realised that I didn’t have the qualifications (so much for school career guidance!) and settled into a clerical job. Then a company-wide initiative meant that I found myself doing the job I had wanted! I loved it and built a career, tried out different roles, slowly climbed the corporate ladder. After 24 years I found myself in upper middle management, vying for the senior roles and as far away from the original job as I could possibly be. I still loved my job as it meant dealing with people and helping others be the best that they could be, and yes I loved the money and the company car and the holidays and so on. However I hated the politics, the higher you get up the ladder the more politics and back stabbing there is.
After a career spanning 24 years, ill health forced a radical change of circumstances and I lost the career, the money, etc. Not quite wiping the slate clean but not far off. It made me really look at who I was and what was important to me and it wasn’t the material things. I realised how much we define ourselves and others by the jobs that we do…take away the job and who are you? So I went on a journey of self-discovery.
And now here I am today doing something completely different, something I never in a million years imagined I would do. I’m not quite sure how I ended up where I am but it’s where I’m meant to be, for the moment anyway. I love my shop, the people that I meet and try to help find their way, the stories and the tears and the laughter we share, the courses we run where we watch people coming in as closed buds and watch them slowly blossoming. As many of my customers say, it’s not just a shop, it’s so much more than that.
What would I do if I was given a clean slate?
Open another shop but maybe in another part of the country. :Denough for him to…
