I remember going to Cardiff and Bristol on day trips. I also had a 5 day school trip to Holland and a 3 day school trip to Belgium but my parents had to really scrimp and save for me to go on those. There was an annual 1 week skiing holiday but only the “rich kids” got to go on that.
Cheaper air travel has made the world a smaller place and I guess the same applies to school trips…

From everything I’ve read the culling will be strictly controlled and monitored. The approach to culling is quite different to that of baiting and it should be quite obvious where the latter, which will still be a criminal activity, has occurred. There will, of course, be a minority who will use the culling as an excuse to go baiting but these people probably still go baiting anyway. Badgers will not be culled en masse as you suggest, but in controlled numbers.
I don’t like the idea of culling but having read all that I have, it seems that there are a number of options being pursued of which culling of badgers is one, vaccination of badgers is another and research into improved control within herds is another. No single strand of this approach will resolve the issue completely, but hopefully with continued rollout of the vaccination programme there will, over time, be more vaccination and less need for culling. It doesn’t seem to be a case of “let’s just kill as many badgers as we can” at all, in fact the emphasis is very heavily on safe and humane culling.
No I haven’t missed your point, I’m just disagreeing with your last point. Resorting to such emotive statements that are highly unlikely is unnecessary (in my opinion), encourages an “us and them” style debate and draws the focus away from the argument for vaccination over culling. Surely that’s counter-productive when trying to get as many people as possible to sign the petition?
From what I’ve read, my interpretation is that the roll-out of the vaccination programme is a trial, if it continues to be successful and proven to consistently reduce bovine TB then it will, in time, replace culling. The sooner that happens and both badgers and cattle can enjoy as TB-free lives as we humans do the better.
Badger baiting is illegal and I suspect that the majority of badger baiters would be highly unlikely to bother applying for a licence to cull, undertake the training required or comply with the controls required. The approach to culling wouldn’t satisfy those who enjoy badger baiting.
An intelligent person knows the difference between culling and killing for “sport”, I’m sure you can debate an already emotive topic without resorting to that kind of argument.
So signing a petition that says “We urge the government to stop the cull and implement the more sustainable and humane solution of both a vaccination programme for badgers and cattle, along with improved testing and biosecurity.” is pretty meaningless when there isn’t an effective vaccine available then… :?
