All this thing about ‘when in Rome etc… How many have visited a muslim country with a gorgous beech or hotel pool and laid around in a bikini or had the odd cocktail?
All this fuss about a bit of material! Are we going to make all jewish men remove their kipper ( or whatever that funny hat thing many wear is called? made hasidic jews remove their curly bits (the long bits of hair behind their ears), religious jewish women no longer allowed to wear headscarfs or wigs – white people of a different religion who can trace their families back for many generations in this country. Also, are we going to ban the wearing of eastern style clothing? etc.
It just seems a bit petty. A few years ago it was single parents who were to blame for everything, now this. Whose going to be next? I vote for blinkered, xenophobic BNP supporters & chavs myself! I think they are far more dangerous to this country economically and its way of life than a muslim woman trying to get a bus.

Hell – rice pudding, anchovies, prunes and gooseberries
31 August, 2006 at 7:08 pm #238550I live in a flat without any outside space so can’t have a wheelie bin of any colour. I also don’t drive & the nearest tip is 6 miles away so rubbish removal is a nightmare. I get delivered 2 rolls of ‘pink’ sacks & each sack is much smaller than the average black sack I could buy at the local pound shop. I only get enough to use two of these a week.
By the time I have cooked meals from scratch so all peelings/meat etc are in plus other non recycling rubbish, unused food, cat litter etc. it is a health hazard to have it in the house so I do have to put it out early. I haven’t had anyone moaning yet but it is only a matter of time.
If I use all the bags before the next lot are delivered I have to go to the council offices and pay nearly £20 for another roll! But recycling bags are only available from the council offices . They will only give one roll per person & they open Mon – Fri 9.30 – 4.30. How are you supposed to recycle when you can’t even get the f’in bags?
Its about time this government put people before profits. If we can afford an illegal war we can quite easily afford decent rubish collection.
30 August, 2006 at 5:24 pm #236483I agree that for some prisons are a soft touch. I worked in the prison service as a typist/secretary & read some of the reports. For many, the thought there but for the grace of god goes I came into my mind.
I think that for the likes of Hindley, Rose West, Brady, yorkshire ripper, serial rapists etc there should be one prison where only these sort of people are held. It can’t be right that a woman who is inside for not being able to pay her TV licence should be in the same prison as these murderers. I also think that there should be more education/skills training and good healthcare and drugs work in the prisons. Not enough is done to stop the drugs getting in.
The thought of someone with say, a 2 year sentence only spends about 3 months in a category A prison and then will move through the system to an open prison (depending on good behaviour). Someone on a 6 month sentence (or imprisoned for not paying council tax etc) will spend the entire time in maximum security prisons. Where is the fairness in that? Might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb!
Anyone who watches Bad Girls will know Tina’s story – a girl who has been so institutionalised that she does not want to leave prison & doesn’t have anyone on the outside. That is very common. Possibly this has to be looked at.
In short, we would not have an overcrowding problem in prisons if the punnishment fitted the crime – lifers who had killed for ‘fun’ in their own jail – who cares if it’s tough, away from families etc but for ‘debtor’ crimes, a softer system with more use of community punishments. Druggies etc should also be in units where there is no chance to get drugs but get help and support to get off the drugs. I don’t care if these people have to travel to the other end of the country to get the support they need.
The low-life scum who cause most of the everyday crime should be in some form of army barracks and made to undergo basic training for the entire length of their sentence – it works for Bad Lads Army, give it a try on a larger scale!
27 August, 2006 at 2:23 pm #237985I live in a semi-rural area & know that alot of the fruit farms around here have to use foreign students to pick apples/strawberries etc or the job won’t get done. Time has moved on. The East Enders do not come hop-picking anymore, living in flimsy little shaks and working for a pittance calling it their holidays!
Emma etc. these jobs need doing. how about volunteering to take their place. Or in hospitals as a cleaner/sluice room worker etc. No? Didn’t think so.
Also, what is so different about these workers coming over here to work when many of our young people go on kibbutz in Israel (when it was safe), working in bars etc abroad during their gap years etc.
As I’ve said before, we are all descendants of immigrants – trace your family history & see when your ancestors came to England – you might be surprised. Whether we like it or not, unless we get these neanderthal chavs to work & not screw it up – and who would trust them anyway, we need people to come to this country & do the jobs you and I are not prepared to do.
